Some of you might know from other post i make that I work as a recording engineer. More of an assistant recording engineer role though.

I don't work for a label nor for an arist. I work for a recording studio that's one of the biggest in the U.S. and they get really good business.

in the last 10 years Record Budgets have drop tremendously! People used to get paid more. engineers, assistants and recording studios. Recording studios have employees like receptionist, cleaning crews, runners(gophers) and general office aids. Is not just some fat guy with a cigar rolling up in his Bently everyday.

There's commun people like me who make just a little bit over minum wage, and on most occasions no over time, no benefits, no real benefits.

Since there's only 4 major record labels now (Universal, Sony/BMG, Warner, & RCA) the business is pretty centralized. AND since there's only 2 main Media/Radio companies in the U.S. and pretty much the rest of the world (Infinity Broadcasting and the ruler of all evil....Clear Channel) labels spend less money on budgets for the making of the albums. and spend WAY WAY WAY more on marketing and on payola.

Basically if you want your record spinned on all the radio stations in U.S. you just have to hand over a fat check to Clear Channel who owns pretty much all of them and you'll be taken care of. Millions of dollars go towards Clear Channel and towards marketing and promotions for the artist. which leads to less money for us. the workers behind the scenes, behin the glass. and since Labels aren't spending much money on studio time and on engineers. they know studios and engineers are hurting so we drop down our prices. we go from earning 40 dollars an hour 10 years ago to maybe 15 an hour if we are lucky. we went from booking a studio for a day from 1700 dollars to 900 dollars. this all leads to the runners, assistants and studio staff to get paid less, to be expendable, and to more and more unpaid internships.

lets face it. albums and the quality ain't what i used to be. people are making "albums in a couple weeks" when it used to take months. an other factor is the digital side of it. 10 year ago a reel of tape for recording costed $160 and you can fit 3 songs on tape. now with hard drives you can buy a 180GB drive for $160 dollars and fit... 3 albums! lol that's why tape is pretty much dead!

People dont buy albums because they are good. they buy them because the labels spend millions of dollars in paying off radion stations to play them non-stop. and since CLear Channel owns 90% of them. its easy! you dont have to send thousands of letters and submissions. Radio stations dont care what the people want to hear. they are going to play the songs from the labels that paid up.

making sure they brainwash you or your kids to believe the song is great that you get off your ass and go buy it.

The more I look at my industry the more I realized we are the proletarient, we are the farmers, the peasents.. the exploited ones. we make things happen. and we make the least money. we get the least credit, and we are always out of a job.

that doesnt help us either. since people also stop buying the albums budgets go down so that means less money for us to make. we already make shit.
