Students of Sustainability 2006 Mission Statement
9 - 15 July
University of Queensland, Brisbane

"Everybody is a student of sustainability"

First and foremost, the SoS 2006 Organising Collective acknowledge the Turrbal as Traditional Owners of this Country on which we meet and organise. We recognise that we stand on stolen land and that this theft and genocide was perpetuated to illegally usurp the sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. But it was not successful.

Since time immemorial, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have manifested sustainability as the cultivation of equitable wellbeing within personal, environmental, ecological, social and cultural spheres. This interconnectedness is demonstrated through practised custodianship of Land. We too recognise the value of the natural system of which we are an inextricable part, and seek to protect this value. We believe in the importance of united, strong, active and creative local communities and cultures.

With respect, we strive towards achieving local and global sustainability.

Locally and globally, the environment is in a state of crisis. The SoS organising committee recognises the interconnection of environmental crises and other manifestations of global injustice, including oppression and discrimination towards people on the basis of their sex, sexual orientation or identity, ethnicity, faith, dis/ability, political, social, or economic status, etc. The SoS organising committee understands that sustainability in any form is impossible while these injustices continue, and as such, we advocate discussion and action in all of these areas, including at the SoS conference.

The SoS 2006 organising committee advocates supportive, respectful and constructive involvement in all aspects of the conference. All participants share their knowledge and learn from each other, bringing their own opinions, voices and ideas. This diversity of voices, ideas and opinions makes SoS what it is.

I really recommend this to people who can make it. It is lots of fun, and you could do what I (and some others) (sorta) did last year. Which is put up anarchist propaganda.

Hippies are biggest group in society that are on the left but don't otherwise have a political conciseness. It is my belief that there is a lot of people who could potentially be turned to anarchism (in belief, if not action). A pacifist anarchist is better then no anarchist at all.

So go to SOS, you won't have to put up with Socialist Alliance folks really because they'll be going to the Resistance thing in Sydney.

I highly recommend this to people. (Now to write my anarchism and the environment paper that I was going to present this year. Oh well next year.)

I was only there for a bit (due to aforementioned res conference...which was awesome coated awesomeness), but it seemed ok, went to a few workshops which were decent and the direct action was fun, really vibrant, targetted beatties office, tunnel corporation, coal mining companies and BHP. We reclaimed the Queen Street Mall for lunch, to the dismay of cops, though we became a bit of a circus attraction to hundreds of bewildered shoppers who didnt know why the fuck 300 hippies were playing hakisack and dancing while they were trying to shop. oh and i met Cthenthar.

And yeah Salt made fools of themselves publicly, yelling speakers they didnt like down, stacking workshops, dominating discussion and generally being rather annoying, they were widely despised by the attendees, and rightly so.

I really, really hope they don't get any autonomous offices at uni this year because well... they'll no longer be autonomous- they'll just be providors of photocopying codes...
