The goverment plans to privatize the universities. In respons students has ockupied 90% of the greek universities, and there is demonstrations and fighting in the streets.

The students are backed up by the trade unions.



On of the big greek newspapers, Elefterotypia, made a survey the 14-15th June -06, showing that:

1: 54,2% of the greek population don't want any private universities or collages.
2: Even 31,1% of the conservative voters don't want any private universities or collages.
3: In a corresponding survey in July -05, 48,6% of the greek population did not want any private universities or collages.
4: 60,4% of the greek people approve of ockupupations as a way of struggle.
5: The students want to continue their ockupations with 70,4%.
6: 60% of the greek population don't accept that riot police should attack the students.

The greek students will prevail. They are probably the most unified protesting force in the world right now, second only two the south korean protestors I think. I think its really awesome too that Greeks have a very deep rooted anarchist base over there.

well, no, the greeks and koreans arent the top. theyre activities and organization is amazing, but i wouldnt count out the bolivians, ecuadorians and venezuelans (each of whome have brought down presidents or dictators in recent years), or bengalis, or palestinians, or plenty of others. but greece is one of the only parts of europe ive always been interested in and would like to visit. amazing political life there.

by the way, what are the best english language sites or blogs that are greece-news focused? i often have trouble finding alternative or leftist sources on greece that are in english, and would love to bookmark anything that fits the bill?

Maybe we should stage a demonstration in solidarity with them? that would be a useful way of showing solidarity.

Fighting privitization of public institutions must always be supported. Best of luck to the Greeks.
