I am in my senior year of high school and I plan to go to Canada for university. While I speak English and Spanish, and am learning Portuguese quickly, I would also like to be able to speak French for when I return. Does anyone hear speak French or know enough to be able to teach me a bit?

I hope that it's not too complicated...perhaps we could have voice conversations over msn or skype or whatever? Thanks.

It should be rather easy if you know Spanish. Just get books like 501 French Verbs and some vocab books on it. If you know the structure of romance languages it's easy to just learn the vocab of the others. There aren't too many differences

Pronunciation is quite different though and certain words are quite different. Other than that, they're both Romance languages.

I'm probably at your level or worse so I could practive with you. As for native French speakers, I don't know of any that have MSN or Skype. LSD might but he probably has a Quebec accent so that may cause some confusion.

well... i dunno if u need french THAT badly anyway... depending wat university u go to. canada is SUPPOSINGLY bilingual, but in anywhere outside of quebec there are more chinese speakers than french XD lol

well my best suggestoin is find a french neighborhood, make some friends, sp;eak some french. i dont quite believe in learning languages in classrooms - when i just immigrated to canada 5 years ago i barely knew the alphbets. i only had to take 3 months of esl, skipped half of it, and the half was useless. i just talked to everyone and learnt english that way.

And beware that french french is different from canadian/quebecois french. for example, lunch in quebec is breakfast in france (or the other way around... i forgot XD well i 'm not too interested in it so yea lol

My mom says that she knows someone who teaches French for a living so I'm going to see if I can organize classes with him.

As for learning languages, you really need to practice them and speak them outside of the class. Classes teach you the basics but they generally don't account for slang or different accents or ways of speaking.

I speak a decent bit of French, but I can't teach you face to face, I'm on the other side of the ocean.
