View Full Version : Nominations: the most technically able guitarist

Hegemonicretribution
20th June 2006, 01:01
OK, I would not say that the best guitarists are necessarily the most technically able, but in terms of being able to play shit like anyone else can't there are a few masters.

Here are my first suggestions, please add others.

Joe Satriani (Satch)
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci
Michaelangelo

Drunk and forgetting initial ideas...but that is a start....

I propose that anyone who adds Tom Morello be banned from the music forum. He's a good guitarist, but not in the same league as Satriani and Vai.

Heres a few more, i will add some later.

Robert Fripp
Santana
Allan Holdsworth

this is easy: BUCKETHEAD

he is this eccentric guitarist that isn't actually in a band, but appears randomly on bands cds when he is asked, because he is fucking amazing. watch his solo at the end of his instructional video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4ZjPYtcMOA

there are a bunch of other videos of him on youtube.

satriani is good, and vai is amazing, but i just think buckethead knocks 'em out of the water.

also worth mentioning is Josh Bauman from Lye By Mistake. I recently played a few shows with him and have one scheduled in the not too distant future. he is amazing. experimental free jazz/metal fusion at its finest. here's a video:

I was going to say the same about Kurt Cobain :D

I would possibly put Davey Knowles up there as well, I doubt many of you will ever have heard of him yet. He was in a local band here, but they have since made headways in the more underground scene in the UK, especially in blues. He is possibly one of the best guitarists I have seen live.

I say jimi hendrix he's the best god damn guitarist in the world even better than eric clapton and slash put togethe. That's just my opinion. He is very technicaly able guitarist he could play his guitar behind his back for fuck sake and upside down because it was made for him that way.

George Harrison is the most skilled guitarist in terms of ability to make good music

Not one of the criteria I am afraid :P

Technically speaking I can play everything Harrisson ever did on guitar and I wouldnt place myself up there. Of course he writes better music than some of the fret-wanking the likes of Malmsteen have produced at times, but in terms of ability they are up there at the top.

Some good suggestions guys, and some lame ones

Socialistpunk I would seriously suggest checking out some of the suggestions, Hendrix may have been more influential, but purely in terms of technique he is quite some way behind more modern guitarists. Slash and Clapton are not even in the same league technically.

Watching live recordings of their shows I have to say

Jimmy Page

he has incredible skill, his fingers move unbelivably fast, and the things he does with the bow are amazing.

Also from talking with guitarists, they say that some of the most difficult guitar songs to play technically those of are Frank Zappa. I don't like his music but supposedly it is some of very advansed and guitarists who want to hone their technical ability practive Zappa.

I was thinking Zappa as well actually, maybe not the most technical, but definitely up there. Kicks Van Halens ass easily, and is generally quite under-rated.

I always found Page a bit sloppy live, I have seen some good shows, but whilst his solos were well written, they are at best a little tricky to actualy play.

I think I like Steve Vai the best out of those. But I really have no idea; I'm 'just' a drummer.

Think it's sad when it focuses on speed and skill and not the music itself though.

Van Halen sucks :P Nah, he has got some skills, but is in a different league from some of the guys mentioned here.

Yes, but this music is mostly for people that play themselves...it pshes the boundaries. I admire immense speed and skill beyond what I can do, and that is why I can get right into to some great guitar music.

I normally listen to good music though, and whilst there are crossovers, the best playing seldom finds its way into the best music. I love a lot of what Brian May did, and I am a huge Gilmour fan, but Steve Vai or Satch would make them look like fools in a guitar-off.

Hego, how about Stevie Ray Vaughan? I don't play guitar, my ears along with what I've seen on video have to say him.

Only Satch album I've heard is "Surfin with the Alien", I can TELL that he is fucking amazing on that guitar, however, the music literally sounds like something I'd hear in a Might Morphin Power Rangers video game......can you suggest something from him a little more musical?

Well, some guitarists are technically stronger, while others are great creating a certain feeling. But..

Axel Rudi Pell, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Jon Schaffer, Eric Claton etc.

SRV I love, I thought of Django Reinhardt (sp?) actually. Perhaps not as good as some of the more modern guitarists, but considering his hands, and the instrument he would have been playing on he is phenomenal.

LMAO  Normally I call it "porno music" but I know what you mean. I prefer Strange Beautiful Music, but most Satch is quite effects heavy.

I did Tears in the Rain (song sounds nothing like Satch) for my music performance exam a few years ago. I have to say that musically that is genius. The chords are enough to drive a seasoned musician mad.

Your average 16 year old guitarist with a bit of time on their hands can fluently play every lick that Morello ever came up with. I have often stated that my favourite live songs to play include some that he has written/played in, but you may as well claim that Ringo was the best song writer from the beatles if you rate Morello's skill as a player (not a writer) against some of the guys mentioned. (actually as a writer too.)

I fail to see how Hendrix could be anywhere newar the best technically, from a guitarist that can play Hendrix licks quite competantly, but wishes they could play some of Malmsteens stuff this appears self-evident.

However the choices of guitarists who are more popular as they are better musicians are unsurprisingly coming through.

So far I think Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen
Buckethead
Michaelangelo
David Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
John Petrucci
erm I am not sure who else to include....

I have other personal favourites from the thread that I think could well be included but these have only been mentioned once at most.
