I really like to dance, but I'm not very good at it. I was wondering if any comrades who are a bit more nimble on their feet had any advice for those of us who aren't so great at it.

I really like 20s flapper dancing and west coast swing dancing, if that matters at all.

I'm not really terrible at dancing...I'm just not as good as I'd like to be; especially at the two sorts that I really like.

Anyway, a revolution without dancing isn't a revolution for me. :P

Thanks!

Just move to the music. Closing your eyes might help, as long as you don't run into anyone. Don't care what other people might think of you.

I "don't dance", but there are several things that dancing is:
1. not running into other people
2. coordinated movement (sometimes guided by the "leader") according to the music (the beats -- "groove" -- of the music)
3. really not running into other people (really!)

It's not hard if you don't know what not to do ;)

Thanks guys...

I can "dance"...as in, not running in to people. I want to learn a style though.

To bring a parallel..I can fight, I just don't know a certain style of martial arts. By the same standard, I can dance...I just don't have any actual steps or anything that make me look anything out of the ordinary.

I'll do a search for websites that might be helpful. I don't know of any places that give west coast swing dancing lessons or flapper dancing lessons around here.

Thanks for the help though. :)

Only way to learn how to dance is to practice participation and observation and or instruction.

So either look for video clips online, buy instructional videos or get lessons.

Check out William Hung's new CD while you're at it, you can take some lessons from that as well.

But seriously, if you're into a more ordered form of dancing, there are books, CD's, and instructors where you can gain info from.

Soon, you'll be on "So you wanna dance?" and I'll be rooting for you.

"Dancin' Fool" - Frank Zappa

Don't know much about dancin'

That's why I got this song

One of my legs is shorter than the other

'N' both my feet's too long

'Course now right along with 'em

I got no natural rhythm

But I go dancin' every night

Hopin' one day I might get it right

I'm a dancin'fool, I'm a

Dancin' fool

I hear that beat; I jump outa my seat

But I can't compete, cause I'm a

Dancin' fool, I'm a

Dancin' fool

The disco folks all dressed up

Like they's fit to kill

I walk on in 'n' see 'em there

Gonna give them all a thrill

When they see me comin'

They all steps aside

They has a fit while I commit

My social suicide,

I'm a Dancin' fool,

I'm a Dancin' fool

The beat goes on

And I'm so wrong

The beat goes on

And I'm so wrong

The beat goes on'n'I'm so wrong

The beat goes on 'n' I'm so wrong

The beat goes on 'n' I'm so wrong

I may be totally wrong, but I'm a

Dancin'fool, I'm a

Dancin' fool

Yowsa, yowsa, yowsa

I got it all together now

With my very own disco clothes, hey!

My shirt's half open, t'show you my chains

'N' the spoon for up my nose

I am really somethin'

That's what you'd prob'ly say

So smoke your little smoke

Drink your little drink

While I dance the night away, I'm a

Dancin'fool, I'm a

Dancin'fool, efc., etc.

I may be totally wrong but I'm a

I may be totally wrong but I'm a

I may be totally wrong but I'm a FOOL-uh!

Hey, darlin'... can I buyya a drink?

Lookin' for Mister Goodbar?

Well here he is... Wait a minute...

I've got it... you're an Italian! Hah?

Yer Jewish?

Love your nails ... you must be a Libra... Your place or mine?

What level would you say you are at? At higher levels it is more refinement and composure, but if your problem is with the basic mechanics then I can only suggest a few classes.

I can't give you too much detail, although I did ballroom, modern and a little contemporary and jazz before (very, very little).

Personally I like to jive :P When I was doing that, it was always working with a partner and practicising that I progressed. But I would suggest dancing with lots of people, you can better learn roles this way (actually I don't know I agree with this..) and you learn how to respond to different sizes, steps and level of experience.

Awesome, thanks comrade!

I try and dance as much as possible...but I only know about three people who are interested in swing dancing, so it's kind of difficult. :P

Not everybody. . .can cha cha cha

Not everybody. . .can do the twist

But EVERYBODY can do the skank.

Its the dance, that can't be beat!

As my gf tells me, if you're a guy you don't really need to know how to dance. Just kinda move your feet and maybe your arms and that's all you need. She gets a bit more funky but that's pretty much all I do :)

Leaving for Cuba in a few (five) months... I would really like to learn something before I get there. Don't want to be that white, clumsy tourist who can't dance.

Timba, Reagaton, Danzon, Salsa, Rhumba, Son, Guajira, Mambo, Jazz, Charanga, whatever. Just need to learn how to dance.

Any videos, instruction videos, clips just to see how Cubans dance would be greatly appreciated.

(I guess moves vary a little according to gender, so just to be a little more spesific; I'm male)

Dancing is orderly and boring and nothing happens out of the ordinary. Moshing-now THAT'S expression put to music!!! More fun, too :P
