How about basses? Personally, give me a pre-CBS Fender Jazz Bass and I'll be your indentured servant.

Phantom bass - either a Vox or PGW.

A relative of mine has a 1948 Fender bass. :P
I like Takamine acoustics and for electrics... Probably a nice Gibson, but I'll have to save forever to get one...

Hmmm... I have a Fender Banjo.. kind of a kit banjo for messing around, and a cheep accustic from Washburn. On the more expensive side I have a Deen electric bass and an Ibanez electric Guitar.
I played on an old Gibson once years ago and have never seen a guitar that could match such quality.. nor could I afford one.

    FFS, I just typed out a rather long reply with a personal take on about 5 or 6 top-end guitars, and now it is gone :(
I won't go into detail again, but custom guitars aside (handbuilt is almost always better) these are my favourite. Notice I avoid vintage guitars...personally I find them overpriced, especially fender or gibson and would rather play something that is better value.
In no particular order:
PRS Curstom Artist package with 24 frets (and birds of course ;)) Overpriced, but very pretty and plays/sounds orgasmic.
Brian Moore (USA made, not import) good, versatile, and very similar to my own instrument. Some are good, some are very good.
Parker Fly Just has to be played to be believed. They weigh next to nothing, and the action is even lighter...seriously. The lightest action I have ever fely, ever. Apparently the novelty can wear off, but from what I played in the shop they were great fun.
Ibanez Jem (most models) Great neck, nice fingerboard and good for playing fast. The pickups lend themselves to metal well, and it is definitely a good duitar, however way too over priced imo, and the prestige around the necks can make things awkward.
Godin LGX SA My own main guitar, and in my oppinion just about the best guitar that you can realistically find for under $2000. Versatile, beautiful, quality of sound and a pleasure to play. Reminds of what a Les Paul should be, but has the more delicate feel of a PRS. Two pickups (both seymour duncan..one custom made) with a five way selector, one piezo pickup which can be used in conjunction because of the second output, and also a midi output for use with a synth. All your normal swictches and knobs, plus an equaliser built into the guitar a bit like the ones you sometimes see on semi-acoustics). Fell in love with this guitar, and never fell out.
I am not rich BTW, but 4 years ago I was in a fairly serious crash and I got £3000 compensation. Most of it went on a new axe, which was my main hobby back then ;) To be honest I am kind of glad I have something good to show for it all, I could neveer afford to replace my set-up.

Original BC Rich guitars are supposed to be very nice (never played one), but I have never been a fan of the new ones. You can get far more guitar for your money if you forgoe the looks. After a while they look tacky anyway imo.
Never was a fan of strats either, least not of fender strats. The lack of an extra fret annoys me at times, but I guess I am just more critical of them because of the status they have. Even deluxe models, or custom shop jobs are not as good as some top-end cover versions of the guitar, yet they cost a lot more.
If it has to be fender, it should be a telecaster :P I actually quite like their warm tone compared to the jangliness of the strat. Neither are great with too much gain though, unless you want to mess around with pickup cavities and install humbuckers.

I bought one of those new korean strats (lite ash) in January for around 700$ canadian, and I must say, it's really good. The neck is beautiful, feels great, and fast too. I've been playing heaps of different guitars in the past few months and I still haven't found anything that I think could give me the same feel as this strat.
Anyways.. the PRS custom 22 is also an amazing guitar... bird inlays etc :P
maybe i'll get one in 5 years.. hah

Acoustics: Epiphone (Don't take this seriously because among steel-string, the ones I like, I've only played one single Epiphone, nothing else)
Electrics: Stratocaster (Don't take this seriously because I only made this decision on price and have only played an electric ONCE, for about 2 minutes, trying it out in a music store)

Oh they do make some nice playing guitars, and apart from squirer strats (I especially dislike them), they make some decent guitars. If you are willing to spend months searching you can get much more for less, I guess this is obvious though. I quite like the Mexican Strats as well, but I would still rather the tele ;)

I remember a music shop in Norwich (cookes, just past Lower Goat Lane if you're ever there) and it was a haven of PRSs but they didn't have ONE lefty! If any of you are left handed, you'll know how few there are! Pisses me off!

I seriously can't play for shit R/H. I try on right-hookers, but I always turn it upside down and fret with my right hand. It's actually not that hard once you overcome the polarity.
Here's one of my guitars (fakima):

As far as mexican strats go, I've played quite a few, and I honestly think this korean strat is miles ahead of the mexican strats :o

Once I have a job Ill save up for a Ibanez Warlock, or a Epiphone hollow-body to play some blues on. So its down to metal or blues; tough call.
Currently I have a PRS Tremonti(SE)(named Esther) which plays beautifully and is the most versatile guitar I know, as it can play jazz, rock, metal, pop, ska, etc with extremly clean tones. Ive had it for two years now, and me loves it.

Synthesizer man myself, but the guitarist in a band I was in had an Ibanez and he swore by it.
Give me a Mini Moog or Poly Moog anyday ;)
Ibanez RG series guitars are what you should be playing if you want to play metal, which everyone blatantly does..... ...... :P
I play a 1989 Ibanez RG570 and its just brilliant! A low action, 24 frets, humbuckers (obviously) and a fat Ibanez Edge Floyd Rose which is better than the original floyd. Though if you are buying an Ibanez - or any other 80's metal guitar like a Jackson - you would be best to stay away from the newer models. They may look the same as the originals, but they're not. Build quality is down on the modern models, as Ibanez was sold off when metal got into trouble in the 90's. They still play alright though, but stick to the 80's models if you want the best. ;)

i like so-so sounding guitars that i can buy for under $175. i break them too often playing shows n' such. currently i am liking the price to quality ratio of the ibanez s-series, but i also like the stock pickups in my OLP (music man rip off).

although I am a bass man myself, my favorite guitar which i plan on getting eventually is the Gibson '61 Reissue SG, with a nice low action, '57 humbuckers, and great accesability, its a beautiful guitar and it work really good for slide, in the cherry finish of course. Basses on the other hand, I would have to go with a Warwick Corvette, or any other Warwick basses.
