I ofton see revolutionaries wearing masks or balacalvas and I have always wondered why they wear one. Is it for thier family and friends safety? Is it for Psychological warefare, an image they are trying to put forth? Or to hide thier identity?

1. To protect identity
2. To symbolize solidarity

This is a first!

They do it to hide their identity. Take the IRA for example. To carry out effective operations - which might be placing bombs under cars or under Thatchers arse, they would need to travel normally in and around urban centers. This means not being known to be a member of an armed group.
When, robbing banks, shooting of propaganda videos, attending and making a presence at funerals, speeches, drive by shootings - it would be necessary for the balacava.

Its a good tricky question though - I could be wrong about what I wrote though :)

"We will remain faceless because we refuse the spectacle of celebrity, because we are everyone, because the carnival beckons, because the world is upside down, because we are everywhere. By wearing masks we show that who we are is not as important as what we want, and what we want is everything for everyone"

I always cover my face if at a protest (well most of the time). The cops take pictures and if they see you doing something, they will try and grab you. If they can't, well next time they might. This is a good reason why you should get crew to try and wear the same sort of clothes (black hoody and black trousers), makes it harder for the scum to identify individuals.
