it's easier to do this through your uni wom*n's collective, but here's the info anyway :)
What is NOWSA?
The Network of Women Students Australia (NOWSA) was first formed in 1987 based on the ideals of building a grassroots, independent and autonomous network of women students. The first NOWSA Conference was held in Brisbane in 1988 and over the years has grown to become a key event on the feminist annual calendar. It is a women only conference, organised by a collective of women students and hosted by a different university in Australia each year.
What happens at NOWSA?
Lots of women get together and spend a week eating, talking, laughing, arguing, supporting and challenging each other. We invite speakers, hold workshops and have fun events, in an attempt to deal with the issues facing women in Australia (and elsewhere) today.
NOWSA 2006
This year NOWSA will be held at Melbourne University, from July 10 to 14. The main theme of NOWSA this year is pushing boundaries. Through this broad theme, we want to interrogate privilege, build community and inspire some action! Some of the issues we’ll be dealing with include:
What it means to live as a woman who is in some way othered in a white-centric,
hetero-centric, capitalist, able-ist and classist society;
Different feminisms and what they mean to women today;
and the million dollar question, what is a woman, anyway?
Also, you’ll have the chance to learn to juggle!
So you’re jumping out of your seat and can’t wait to register? See your friendly women’s officer/s for a registration form.
Workshops
We would love for volunteers to run some fun and exciting workshops. If you are interested attach your details and an outline of the workshop that you would like to run to your registration form. It would be great if the workshops engaged with the themes outlined above.
Building Community
The NOWSA collective is really excited about building a fun, supportive atmosphere where we all have the opportunity to get to know each other. To facilitate this we’ve organised accommodation at Greenhouse Backpackers, which is centrally located in the city on Flinders Lane. This is a voluntary option, so you are free to organize your own accommodation if you prefer. However, if you are interested, please indicate on the registration form by circling the ‘registration and accommodation’ option. The full cost of accommodation will be $110 ($22 per night for 5 nights) however ask your Women’s Officer if a subsidy is being offered. We don’t want the cost of the event to deter anyone from being able to attend, so please contact us if you are experiencing difficulties (contact details overleaf).
For more information, to obtain/hand in registration forms or volunteer to run a workshop, see the Women’s Officer/s at your institution. Alternately you can contact the NOWSA 2006 Collective at: [email protected]
