Tony Blair's youthful enthusiasm for radical socialism and his admiration for communism's founder Karl Marx are revealed in letter written in 1982.

In the 22-page letter, the 29-year-old Mr Blair tells then Labour leader Michael Foot how reading Marx had "irreversibly altered" his outlook.

He also praises Tony Benn, agreeing with the left-winger's analysis that Labour's right-wing was bankrupt.

Details of the future prime minister's letter are in the New Statesman.

He begins his letter - written just after he had lost Labour's deposit as the party's candidate in the Beaconsfield by-election - by describing how he was initially inspired by Marx but later rejected his teachings.

'Stifling'

"I actually did trouble to read Marx first hand. I found it illuminating in so many ways; in particular, my perception of the relationship between people and the society in which they live was irreversibly altered," he wrote.

"But ultimately it was stifling because it sought to embrace in its philosophy every facet of existence. That, of course, is its attraction to many."

Mr Blair also attacked the "arrogance and self-righteousness" of many groups on the far left which he argued were "deeply unattractive" to ordinary Labour members.

The future prime minister believed Mr Foot should expel Militant Tendency - something that Neil Kinnock would ultimately achieve.

"There should not be a party within a party," he said.

'Different approach needed'

Mr Blair went on to urge Mr Foot to adopt bold policies to convince the "legitimate left" that he had not become a "prisoner of the right".

"I would indicate firmly that you believe the party needs radical, socialist policies; that the scale of the problems we face as a nation in 1982 means a different approach to previous years," he said.

"The job of reconstruction, particularly against a background that includes new technology and a USA in the grip of the same economic madness Mrs Thatcher visits upon us, is mammoth.

"Profound problems require profound remedies."

Mr Blair signs off advising Mr Foot to make clear he would be leading Labour into the next election and that he would win it - Mr Foot would go on to lead Labour to defeat in the 1983 poll.

The letter was discovered by historian Robert Taylor while he was researching a history of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

Mr Blair attacking us for being arrogant and self-righteous, is like Hitler calling us 'extreme'.

Blair is nothing but a 'journeyman' politician. If he ever had any true socialist beliefs, he gladly exchanged them for a position of power.

He has pushed the political spectrum in the UK way over to the right, so much so that now we have the Liberals proposing a pact with the Tories at the next election.

He sold the Labour Party 'down the line' for his moment in the spotlight and we (I was a member at the time) bought it completely.

In many ways he is worse than Thatcher, because he had our trust, and he pissed it away.

Ah yes so we wil embrace marx but try and get rid of the main marxist group the militant tendancy. This is the typical toaken appretiation of old labour careerists. The militant tendancy was a serious revolutionary organisations and so the social democrats that pay lip service to Marx threaten to expel them.

The militant tendancy was a serious revolutionary organisations....

It was an organisation in the singular, though, at the time, the people involved in the tendency wouldn't have described it as an "organisation" in any sense on the word. The "official" line, if I remember correctly, was that they just read The Militant paper.

As for its "revolutionary" nature, well, try this (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=50531&view=findpost&p=1292081620). The Militant were radical social-democrats who showed their true allegiances when push came to shove....that is, when they were being forced out, they threatened to grass working class militants up to the piglets.

As for Blair's letter, well, that's politics I suppose. Though 22 fucking pages; were they all about Charlie?

Sorry that was a typo I know it was only one organisation. I agree that the official newspaper line was fulling noone, but I disagree with that thread, however I don't wish to turn this into a mini version of that thread. Truth is the militant tendancy is probably the most influential british socialist group ever. Cettainly the most influenctial non-stlainist group.
