View Full Version : Post-Revolutionary Holidays

Something that just crossed my mind: holidays.

What will holidays be like after a revolution?

Most of the religious holidays will probably have the same fate as religion, of course. But what about secular holidays, and holidays like Christmas that more or less 'lost' the religious aspect over time?

Things like gifts (for those holidays that are characterized by gift-giving) will be, more or less, pointless, as everything will be 'free' and communally owned.

How do you think holidays will be in a Communist system? Which holidays will be around (like May Day, naturally) and how will they be celebrated?

"Hurrah, it's Comrade Claus!"

Holidays were always about people gathering together to celebrate something. I don't see why it would be much different.

Also, I don't see why gifts wouldn't exist anymore; it's just that the thought behind the gift will count more than the amount of money spent on it.

Maybe because they'll be free? <_<

I mean, the only reason we accept gifts, at least the only reason I accept gifts, is because I want something yet I don't want to pay for it....or can't pay for it. Yet in a society where I could get that gift for free anyway, I'd just do that....it would certainly be far better if we could choose our own gifts, that way we'd avoid getting the shitty ones. And lets be honest here, most gifts are shit no matter how much "thought" is put into them; the only good gifts I tend to get, are the ones that people have asked me about and I've told them to get.

So I think gifts should probably be dispensed with....and, possibly, ritualised holidays as well. There'd simply be no need for them, especially as people in a communist society would be in a position to decide their own holidays rather than adhere to societies set schedule.

So yeah, in a communist society the motto is: FUCK GIFTS AND HOLIDAYS! But until then, they're cool....and if anyones wondering, I need an ashtray. :P

Everyone would get the day off and come together with family.

That's either because a.) Nobody really puts thought into gifts, or b.) Everybody hates you!

Maybe instead of exchanging gifts people would simply do something on a holiday, such as May Day or some similar. Go out into the woods, onto the fields, get drunk, and just generally spend the time enjoying themselves rather than being stuck with their so-called family all day? Organise all day water fights, maybe? Wrestling matches? Mass play fights (harking back to the glorious revolution)?

Seriously, where is the pleasure in giving gifts? I have never understood it. What is more, where is the pleasure in giving gifts when it is obvious that they can be received at any time for free? I think that in a communist society people would replace giving gifts with giving pleasure and excitement and general fun.

I don't get out much... Well, not at all really, so this is probably ridiculously naive of me.

Gifts are more then just about buying something though. You could make the person something, write them a poem or do something nice for them. :P

I don't think that there would be as many holidays as before. Holidays whether religious or not are about releasing frustrations and becoming a little more happy with our shitty lives. Hopefully, this will change in a post-revolutionary society.

I would think that May Day would still be around and of course a day celebrating the revolution.

We should return Christmas and Easter to the original pagan roots...so we can get high and dance around at the equinox!

May 1 is an obvious holiday in post-revolutionary society.

No, people would not "get the day off". You're implying that in a communist society people woild be on a fixed schedule on work and would have to take the day off from work to be with their families. They would take it if they felt like it because they wouldnt be under the command of any bosses.

Fine but in that case we'll need a individual and communal production goal. This will make sure hat people actually do go to work once in a while. Also Labor Time Vouchers would be necessary to make sure they have a carrot incentive rather than a stick incentive to do the work. Now that I think about it, perhaps special non-necessities that aren't collectivized would be given to one another. Or maybe we just wouldn't recognize holidays like christ-mas.

The biggest holiday "problem" I see will be May Day after the revolution. What will we do that is fun?! I propose leaving, say, three blocks of corporate multinationals and bourgie shops in every city. Once May Day rolls around, we can go have a riot there.

Celebrate the revolution every year of course! :D

Make it a huge celebration, parties, fireworks, etc... Christmas, New Year's Eve etc. all rolled into one.

we can have some people who draw short straws dress up as pigs and wave around foam batons and throw pink smoke at us... and when we get tired we can all go and play golf on the corporate lawns, just so that everyone remembers just how horrible life was under capitalism and how dreadful the recreation activities were *shudder*

If you're like me, you have NO pride in your surroundings. Just flick the fagash on the carpet and stub them out on the walls! ;) Unfortunately I live most of my time in a bureaucratic institution and the rest with my right-wing patriotic parents! :(

If they like it, it is kinda nice.
What about love? For example: [I]Ilove you Hegemonic Retribution x x x x x x x x  (you are a guy right?)
