View Full Version : Neohippies - Anybody else see these people.

alright, at my school we have clicks just like every other school. And of course we had the popular click or whatever you want to call it. Anyways, over a summer they decided to start growing there hair out, smoke pot, and "claim" they listen to bob marley. I see these bastards all the time wearing t-shirts with like bob marley, hendrix, and zeppelin on them. But if you ask them to name a damn hendrix song, all they know is "Purple Haze". And they only supposedly listen to marley because "He smoked pot man." But, at the same time, they are typically right wingers to the extreme. Maybe its just because i live in the south, I dont know. Does anybody else have the same problem, and am i just for thinking this way, or am i overreacting.

Yeah, I have them in the form of "punks", but their as right wing as they come.

I'm a neo-hippie, and of course you have a few posers, but the majority of my friends are hardcore socialists. Today me and my hippie friends led the Leftists to a takeover of the college student union. At the most die-hard cappie school in town.

Don't be callin' me no poser :)

im not man, but u should see these people. We have NOTHING but posers at our school. Its insane

peace man :cheesy:

when I was in school, there were the group of kids calling themselves rastafarians. HAHA and I'd put money on the fact that they have no clue who Ras Tafari was  ....... and this was most likely because they wanted pot smoking to be their "religion" because it's cool or something...... just a bunch of white, middle-class kids in dreds, haha :)

i dont see how wearing led zepplin or hendrix or marley shirts is being a poser i know many people who just like good music maybe thats just where i am

Lefty
6th May 2003, 21:03
Yeah, we have those at our school, but they aren't that right wing. I think they just avoid everything political. However, they do have long hair, wear Bob Marley and smoke copious amounts of ganj.

Dirty Commie
6th May 2003, 23:33
I wouldn't call myself a 'neo hippie' but I like tye-dye, Bob Marley, Jimi henrix, I have long hair, and am the most lefti wing communist I know, and the problem with rich white kids listening to Marley and Jimi is that they have no clue about the message they send ih their lyrics, or what they stand for an why.
Yeah, most of the kids who do this are right wing SOB's who don't have a clue about what happens in the world.
Personally I would like to have dreads, but my parents won't let me.

seems to me that the neo-hippies are the bastards who have hijacked the left so as they can get hash legalized.

I dont mean to be dogmatic about things, but arent drugs a capitalist ploy to dumb the workers?

And a bunch of hippies aint gonna work when the revolution comes, theyll complain about something else.

Yeah, that's right. I believe it was Ronald Reagan himself who invented the cannabis plant.

BluesyZapatista- I know what youre saying. Throughout middle and high school everyone used to make fun of me- because i was a braless, grungy hippie with political views and cuz i smoked a lot of pot. Suddenly junior year they all decided to become "hippies." Like people in your school they decided to wear tye dye, hemp jewelry, and berkies and listen to bob, thinking that it would make them cool and hippies. Then they started saying i was a poser even though i have always been the same; i was that way years before they ever were. It killed me man. It just pissed me off because they didnt know what being a hippie was. Its not about having dreads and being dirty or whatever--- it a political statement, which they completely missed. I dunno, i dont like people trying to be who theyre really not. I cant imagine living a lie. So i totally understand where your coming from. :)

Of course, not all leftists are "hippies"... I fit quite nicely into the "geek" click at my school.

Dirty Commie
7th May 2003, 03:04
DM, theres nothing wrong with being a geek, if you admit it.

SC/BZ I feel your pain, I am hated for being a hippie, and most of the criticism comes from fake hippies who spend more money on hemp and tye dye than what a real hippie makes a year.
If I was a woman I wouldn't wear a bra either:)
Yeah, most of the fake ones missed the point, usualy by starting a hippie club, or saying Bob was ONLY making music, not sending a message. Those people suck.
They don't even make their own hemp jewelry.

apathy maybe
7th May 2003, 04:28
for some reason I get called a hippie by a right winger at school, but I'm not. in fact I don't like labels so I prefere to be a "Next" which is basicly a label just for me.
I don't wear a bra either ;-)

Sandanista
8th May 2003, 00:21
I dont wear a bra either, maybe thats coz im a man, really who cares? bras make ladies jugs look nicer, although some are good outside the bra.....

Anyway if u are different from the main social groups anywhere in life they just tend to generalise you, basically because they're ignorant and dont have a scooby!

Dirty Commie
8th May 2003, 00:34
yeah, most of the people who generalize others are ignorant.

8th May 2003, 03:01
fortunately, there aren't any hippie posers at my school. just potheads. i'm probably only the person you'd identify remotely with a hippie who doesn't do pot.

i listen to 60's music, love tie-dye, love ethnic clothing (indian, guatemalan, etc), would like for everyone to be able to get along, would get dreads but then i couldn't brush my hair which i like to do, and yes, i DO make all my own hemp jewelry.

my style tends to fluctuate though. for example, i LOOOOOVE gothic/renaissance gowns

and i'd rather not wear a bra but if i don't it's like, really really obvious. so i do.

i get called a communist hippie. but i'm not that bothered

exploding toast
8th May 2003, 03:23
i get the same problem with punks and people who think they are hippies, and start listening to phish and marley etc. im just like name 10 songs by either hendrix marley etc. and they are like aaaa

My old school (in New Zealand) had a school uniform, so on days where we could wear our own clothes i would see people wearing Che t-shirts. I asked one of them what they thought of him, he replied " oh, he's some anti USA guy, isn't he?". Most of these morons don't evan know what the hell they are showing their suppor for.

yeah. che just looks so mad cool that people wear him on their shirt no matter what. if i see someone wearing a che shirt or any che-ized accessory i ask them what they think of him. then i chew them out if don't know who he is, "know what you're saying before you go out and say it" and stuff like that.

All I see in my area are Yuppies...

yeah, yuppies. What the hippies of old turned into. The conservative, SUV-driving people who always scream about the 'children' - while supporting brutal and viscious combat.

They advocate against violence, for guns, etc, but when it comes to either they act completely differently

A conservative hippy. That's all they are.

dopediana
8th May 2003, 21:17
it's not fair to rag on the true hippies though. so stop generalizing. last i checked, plenty of punks were going apolitical and becoming clotheshorses with no worthwhile political standings or none whatsoever.

Dirty Commie
8th May 2003, 21:26
I don't mind being generalized as a Communist Hippie, because only the ignorant morons do it. It is they who end up copying you, giving you a chance to rant on them for hours about having no life of their own.

I live in wiggerland, with a dose of sloanes on the side. It's pretty boring, I don't fit in cos either I'm totally non-descript, no make up, no brands, etc, or kinda hipy in that I wear ethnic clothing, or "goth" which is really mosher/punk/goth, depending on what exact clothes I'm wearing, it all depends on my mood at the time. I don't think people really remember me anymore, I was "the goth going out with the goth" or something, but that was like two years ago, and now I'm nothing.

I like hippy ideals but there are so many "hippies" who are in it just for the pot and free love, fuckers (what a great pun!!!). My politics is central to me, more important than pretty much anything else.

I love ethnic clothing too! :o I just bought these really cool earings, they're kind of chain-linked with brownish beads and feathers on them, I'm absolutly in love with them!!!! I'm wearing a hemp necklace right now that I made the other day, it's crappy-quality hemp though, but it still looks cool. And I've put my hair in dreds a few times, hahaha, we're a lot alike, you an I. You'd probably be the type of person I'd hang oiut in school with, lol. But I am finally understanding the liking of hair brushing. I usally go months on end without brushing my hair, partially because it's too long and it just pisses me off. But I woke up the other day and decided I wanted a hair cut, so I went to the hair studio....yada yada yada.... my hairs are cut now, and I've brushed my hair this morning... and blow dryed it.... and put in some hair putty (left over from what I used to make dreds) ..... I'm afraid that I'm going to turn into a person who cares what they look like, lol. And I'll probably brush it tomorrow, and the day after that... then I'll just keep it in a pony tail for a month and wont touch it ;) nah, just kidding, I'll wear this look for a while :cheesy: I like it.

mentalbunny, felicia, and you little dirty commie, i bet we'd all be just fabulous hippie friends. let's go camp at the philadelphia folk festival this august! ani di franco is going to perform there and a bunch of other spiffing folks. and we can dread eachother's hair (lol, that sounded hilarious, get it? dread? be afraid? haha i'm jsut cracking myself up here) and make hemp jewelry and sing along as i play my pathetic guitar and discuss injustice and mellow out.

eeee, i'm particularly giddy right now because i just passed my 1st behind the wheel driving class. 6 more to go before i get my license.

much love to all except the cappies,

Whats wrong with dreadies? Im a dirty hippie with dreadies! :) I love dreads, especially cuz i dont like to brush my hair. They're nice- no bugs, no stink. I too make all my hemp jewelry :) I also make all my clothes, sometimes out of hemp fabric.

As for ani- love her!!! Notice- its part of my signature thingie. Seen her so many times and each time i love her more.

i would make more hemp jewelry except beautiful beads are far too expensive for me to afford these days. at the beginning of the summer, i'm going to put my hair into a bunch of teeny braids (like black person hair, pardon the distinguishing racial description). so i can pretend i have dreads. i think i'll buy a tam to put them up in, too. i've been wanting an excuse to get a tam for the longest time. ani's great

and you ought to join our new "board hippie coalition" too!

Nothing wrong w/ the basics. I'm a t-shirt and slacks type person. Everything I get is by designers who work with Unite! -- the anti-sweatshop labour organisation. Ken Cole is my fav.

OH MY GID! FELLOW ANI FANS!!!! I'M SO EXCITED!

my friend intorduced me to ani and I fuckin' love her, she rules like nothing on earth, I'm listening to Dilate right now! Which are your fave albums?

Well Philadelphia sounds great but I'm stuck in the UK. If you ever come over let me know, and if I'm heading stateside then I'll tell you and we can have a hippy party! And you can listen to my shitty acoustic political songs and teach me how to be a real hippy, cos right now I have to conform way too much, school rules being what they are!

Where are you going felicia? And sorry about the typo in my last post, it should be "god" not "gid", but I expect you worked that out.

Well my friend has nearly all the Ani albums, except the new one, one other and some of the live ones, but between her and her friend they have all of the, which is pretty cool! her fave is the plastic castle one, can't remember the exact title. I'm so annoyed, Ani's comnig to the UK, but it's during my exams so I can't see her! Apparently she's absolutely awesome live!

Soul Rebel
10th May 2003, 21:48
its "little plastic castle" i've got like every album, plus her live shit. my bro. is also getting me some of her videos at work, which is hot. maybe we can set up an arrangement to send you some stuff :)

mentalbunny
11th May 2003, 14:28
Well you could, at the moment I'm just burning all my mate's stuff which I feel a bit bad about because Ani probably deserves my money, or at least some of it, but then if I dont' buy her stuff I can support other small bands on independent labels and support other stuff, it's not like I'll use that money to buy metallica CD's or make-up or Nike clothing!

Well, at least they aren't just straight republican. If they are cool enough to smoke, they may well be cool enough to change. I know a couple neo-hippie pseudo republicans that I actually persuaded to change to pretty leftist. The trick is to smoke with them, and have a political discussion while baked. It worked.

I have the same problem at my school. I am a neo-hippie and a marley listener and i have long hair and hang out at a rasta store where i get alot of che stuff. Bob was the greatest and if you ask me to name any marley songs i could probably name hundreds. But there are right winger crew cut kids at my school who wear marley shirts but i have like twenty five marley shirts and started the whole marley extravaganza at my school. The crew cut ids who wear marley shirts avoid political stuff but me and fellow commie, that's all we talk about. LONG LIVE THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT.
