This is really fucked. the South Central L.A. farm has been raid by the PIGS of the LAPD and taking over as they served an eviction notice this morning. Farmers and Supporters were beat and some taken into coustody. 4 people still remain in the farm up on the trees were they tied themselves to the tree.
people are starting to block long beach blvd. as a form of protest and well. im bout to head down there. guess im gonna miss the brazil game.

The actions of the LAPD are inexusable and I wish you all luck with your protest, I would join but it would involve taking a flight over there, possibly making me arrive a little late.

(background i guess...)
Begining at 5 AM this morning, LA police forcfully evicted some 350 farmers, predominantly poor latinos, who have been farming and living on community land that was donated to the Food Bank after the LA riots. After a sell-out court ruling, the city overturned it's donation of the inner-city land (land taken over by eminant domain in the 80's for a city trash incinerator that was never complted and then donated to the California Food Bank post-riot, for community members to farm), and returned the land to Ralph Horowitz, who was a partner of the orginal company that owned the land before it was posecessed by the city.
Soon after the land was wrestled from under the community, Horowitz began a court battle to evict the farmers unless they paid 16 million dollars for the land. The Food Bank and farmers were unable to raise the full amount but offered the 5 million that Horowitz paid for the land, but the offer was refused.
The farmers and community members were givin their eviction notices on March 1st and have been living and farming on the land illegally until today.
According to the LA Indymedia this is the sequence of events for the police attack:
"5:20 a.m. The sherrifs are at the farm. The eviction process is starting now. Farmers are calling all activists to converge to the farm for a massive protest (Alameda & 41st Street). The eviction might take up to 3 to 4 hours or longer."
9:00 a.m. Jake writes: 1) The sheriffs had already broken open the lockboxes that people were using to lock themselves down to prevent their removal from the farm.
2) About 10 people had been dragged out, and two people were sent away in ambulances. We don't know what happened to them or how they are doing.
3) Bulldozers were lined up outside the fences, ready to come in.
10:15 a.m. Bulldozers are breaking down the fences, and the tree is being cut. Traffic is bottlenecked around Alameda.
10:30 a.m. Bulldozers are on the farm. Cherry pickers coming in to farm now. Daryl & John still in tree. People still locked down around tree. About 300 supporters protesting outside now.
12:10 p.m. Farmers and supporters stopped traffic at 41st and Alameda. Police declared unlawful assembly and cleared the streets. Reports of a dozen arrests at this incident. Supporters are asked to come to 41st and Long Beach.
1:30 p.m. Daryl Hannah and John Quigley are among the estimated 45 arrests so far. Sheriffs will allow the farmers to return within 15 days to claim property they left on the farm. Tezozomoc from the SCF reports that Horowitz will immediately proceed with bulldozing the farm though this could not be confirmed. Mayor Villaraigosa will be staging a press conference at 3 pm in front of city hall. Update: link to audio interview with Leslie Morava by Free Radio Santa Cruz
"4:00 p.m. The Farm plots are being Bulldozed. Farmers and supporters are crying as their gardens are turned into rubble. There will be two candle light vigils at 7pm tonight. One at the farm (41st and Alameda or Long Beach blvd.) where organizers are calling on people to respect the police barriers. The other at the "Mayor's Mansion" 605 S. Irving St. in Hancock Park. Bring candles and food to share."
The news media is continuing to spin this story with the easy help of the celebs that decided at the last second to "support" the farm. Instead of focusing on the REAL people involved, the poor community members who worked the land, the media has turned this into a celeb/hippy love fest, which it WAS NOT! This was about supplying food to folks who needed it, and a city who decided to submit to the will of a greedy buisnessman instead of the well being of its people. The government refuses to allow folks to prove that they don't need them and become self-sufficient without the use of coporate food, and instead wants to crush anyone who does not partake in this corrupt capatalist system that creates hunger.
To me the city knowingly commited an act that will contribute to the starvation of hundreds of families. I concider this an act of war, not comerce.

I was there and im returning later on tonight. i feel so fucking helpless. i really do. i cant do a fucking thing for those people. i can just stand out there with them. but that dont do shit for them. I hate this feeling... I feel sorry for the fucking PIGS. just looking at them standing there blocking us from the entrence. i feel sorry that they are 'YES' men. fucking pigs.
There were a few in the croud mixed in. acting like they were people. but they stuck out like a sore thumb. this one guy asked me "why the mask?" and I said "so that they(the cops) can't recognize me"... and he goes "a mask gives the impression that you want violence, or carry a weapon." i look at him and tell him
"they carry the weapons, they were beating up supporters earlier, they are the ones who are being violent" and then he goes.. "the KKK wear mask" and I said to him "what's your point here???"
LOL goodness!

I tried posting this in the news...but the mods are slow to approve it. <_<
Why are they being evicted? Is it just so they can build something on that land? I've had incidents like this in my town(though not on this scale) where the town officials were making deals with private contractors. The town would claim imminent domain, the officials who were collaborating with the contractor got a large 'donation' and the contractor is awarded the land.
What an F'd up country america is.
But best of luck to everybody who's still hanging out there. No doubt this will be a big issue on the mainstream news in days to come.
@ R_P_A_S: How many people were there (cops and supporters)? I don't think they could have stood up to Everyone charging through at once. And they certainly won't shoot. (bullets at least). Did you by any chance bring a camera?

I heard about this....
Although I support their cause....I hate seeing how they're intimidated and abused by the pigs
They're just letting themselves get clubbed and pushed around whatnot
I like how they're protesting, but nonviolent action is risky and not very smart IMO
I think they'd be more successful if they took the garden 'hostage' and defended it
Of course not with guns, but with their clubs and farming utensils
Most ppl in Southern California don't know what all the big fuss is about
I think making a violent and resistant statement would work in their favor, instead of letting themselves get beat up-dragged- and taken off with lil resistance

All this shows how the cops are an intrument of state repression and to protect the private property of the bourgeiosie. NOw, these poor farmers will be driven off from probably the only means they had to survive, damn capitalism, damn capitalism.

Damn. I feel like an ass. Living in LA and not hearing about this at all. Ive been alittle out of touch lately, but I didnt realize I was that completly removed.
Anyone have an article on this?
Also the LAPD, though douches, are far from "modern day SS". You wouldnt be posting here if they were the "modern day SS".

^The courts work with the police department to punish those who do not follow capitalism's rules, as such any time the police are accused or investigated for abusing their "power," their friends in the legal sector of society get em off the hook
Our US comrades should remember the Rodney King beating as an example of such hipocrissy
