I have a question for members here from America. Do any of you have social lives? If so, are you college aged or in college? Are you or are you not on welfare, etc...? I have no social life because of my political beliefs, how about you?

I'm just in High School, but yes I do have a social life. I don't go to your typical teen parties, but we have parties of our own. I don't like to hang out much with the popular kids at my school. I do usaully attend our local music venue weekly.

Do people know about your radical politics? If so, you live in a very liberal area. If anybody in SoCal found out about mine, I would take either verbal abuse or a black eye. All young people in SoCal are right-wing military types who hate and despise all those to the left of the DNC, including the DNC itself.

Hey man, what were you restricted for?

Anyway, I'm not American, but I live in the Netherlands, in a small town that has a very bourgeois reputation, although there is a more "normal" neighbourhood that I live in. In the rich privileged area most people vote for the neo-liberals, in the rest of the town the social-democratic Labour Party and the "social liberal" Green Left are popular(the GL recently beat the neolibs in municipal elections). There is a big city right next to it with about 180,000 people, which mostly votes social-democrat as well(Labour and the Socialist Party). The surrounding towns are more conservative.

So anyway, enough background, and back to the topic at hand, I'm not at all unsatisfied with my social life. I don't go out on a weekly basis, but I'm always up for it, usually just going with comrades from the city. I really don't have anything to complain about. I know some people whom I used to be friends with in high school(which I've just finished), but I don't hang out with them all that much anymore, most were completely and utterly liberal anyway. Other friends that I did hang out with were all in some way progressive, although by no means communists. Other people that I hang out with are comrades.

All in all, I don't have much to complain about socially.

I'm in high school too. I'll be a senior next year. :D I can't wait to get out. I live in the south, in the Bible belt but yet I am very vocal on my opinions be they blasphemous or anti-imperialist but yet I don't get beat up for leftism. I've been to SOCal too and I just don't see it, there's your pick of right-wing type military kids anywhere but it honestly doesn't seem THAT bad, atleast on a local level.

Start threatening the government on their terms and your ass is theirs, so to speak. :P

I don't hate the government as much as I hate the people. The people are rabid conformists who hate and despise all those with rebellious or collective attitudes. Almost every young person on the west coast believes that all social programs should be abolished, and that anybody who disagrees is a low life drug abusing sex offender.

Find some public opinion polls to back this up. I REALLY can't see that. <_<

lol, yeah right. Souther California is pretty liberal from what I hear. I highly doubt that "Almost every young person" on the west coast is a right winger. It's california for christs sake.

But anyways, I don't really have much of a social life. Iill be a senior in highschool this year. I have one friend that I hang out with often besides my girlfriend. he calls himself a communist, but he really isn't, and has become all religious so we don't really hangout as much as we did because he literally quotes from the bible and reads it while he is here. especially if i try to talk philosophy...
My girlfriend is a religious centirst, who supports the war and bush. She is against my political beliefs and we argue often. I'm surprised we have been together for almost 2 years.

I don't know ANY communists, or anarchists around my area, at least who should be taken seriously. There are the few teenage angst anarcho-punk kind of kids but thats about as close as it gets. I REALLY want to find a group of serious leftists, or at least very liberal group of friends who will discuss government and philosophy with me. But I guess that is too much to ask for..I'm dieing in the bible belt.

There is this guy I am friends with who claims he is a Marxist, but he has never so much as glanced at Kapital, thinks wearing Che Shirts makes him a revolutionary, and is actually extremely Nationalistic (I am beginning to think the US is right in fearing China if this guy is something to go by!) so we do not discuss Politik much.
There is no Socialist Movement in Hong Kong, but next year another friend and I are starting a political discussion group at school, so maybe that will change.

I used to have a girl friend until last month. She was a 'soft lefty' although very religous. She broke up with me because of my slight condonement of Al Qaeda.

I just got out of high school. I have a girlfriend and a few friends I hang out with every once in a while. I also have a few friends at a local infoshop that we have in my town (see signature). There are a few people there who come somewhat close to thinking like I do politically (a few lifestylist anarchists, mainly), but not very many.

Otherwise, my area really sucks. It's very obvious that it's right in the middle of the bible belt. I think we have something like 6 different bible colleges in town! :o

Edit: Oh yeah, and the World Headquarters of Assemblies of God. :o

I live in a very conservative area, rural central-illinois. Hell, Ronald Reagan's birthplace is 25 minutes away, I even drove through it today.

I'm not really vocal about my views. If someone asks them my opinion though, I will certainly give it. One of my friends know's I'm an anarchist and she's cool with it. Another one knows I'm "anti-government."

You just have to find the right friends. I'm pretty picky in my selection of friends. It sucks since I go to a school of 280 kids. I know one person who claims to be an anarchist, although I'm not sure how serious he is.

Trust me, SoCal isn't that conservative, especially compared to where I live.

I'm similar to you. I used to go out and party with the "cool kids" but lately I just have kick backs with a close knit of friends where we talk about an array of things including politics. There are certain areas of SoCal that are very conservative i.e. Santa Clarita but in the more urban areas such as Hollywood and Santa Monica you can find a mix of both sides.

Yeah, I have a social life. I live in a pretty reactionary area so I don't reveal myself to everyone. And no, I'm not on welfare.

I don't know where you are in the South, but it is tough here. I'm in the South, and noone, out of my close circle of friends, will even give me the time of day on political issues.

I'm from SoCal so I know that your blanket statements about the youth are not true. Yeah there are gong to be conservatives wherever you go, especially like in the rich cities, but a lot of times, many people my age haven't even formed any political beliefs.

And no, I'm not on welfare. If I was would that be a problem? And yeah, I have a social life. If you live anywhere in the IE hit me up for a big ass party this friday ;)

I'm in San Diego. Wait, isn't the inland empire almost universally conservative? Which part do you live in? I currently live in La Jolla, but I grew up in Oceanside, which is farther north.

PS: I see, you live in Sun City.

I was in Oceanside last week. The IE is far from being universily conservative. To the contrary in fact. Lately however I have seen ads for various "conservative Republican(s) fightng to secure our borders" running for state something or other. I haven't really seen that before but I doubt they'll get much support. The support they do get will be from people in cities like Temecula or La Jolla :P

yea i got a pretty good social life, and yes anyone who hangs around me knows (in varying degrees) about my radical politics; certainly up unto the point that im communist/radical left. Its not really a problem here, though sometimes they go all like "err...the USSR sucked.." or "lol you're dreaming dude, go hug some trees" but thats it.
Oh the worst response i ever got was "you fuckin freak" :P

I got a great social life but Im not a socialite.

I dont really got alot of friends from the upperclass.
I got friends all around town. No one gives me any shit for my beliefs. Once this white man who we lived with used to always give me shit for my beliefs all the time but I didnt dare argue with him too much, beacuse he took us in.

We cleaned his house-sort of, and bought the food and tried to make good sure not to piss him off with our poor people problems but in the end of the day he didnt understand and I think it frustrated him to live with us.

Imagine all the republicans, if some poor people lived with you. Youd have to face your own beliefs. Youd get mad every time you see us buy magazines or clothes that were nice, but the truth is that money wouldnt do shit if we saved it anyway.

Its hard to get welfare. Ima check out some food stamps though. I had medicaid but it got cut off right before I got the flu. Then everyone got hte flu, and there went the money I had all saved up to get a car!

I will not go to college. It tires me. I have no fantasy about the 18 hour day. Never that. I did that shit in highscool and it turns me off. I rather have my sleep. At the young age of 18 I am tired by alot of things my counter parts and enthused by, and in a way thats kind of unfortunate. but everyones different. I just want to pay my fucking bills and have a nice bed to sleep in and a washing machine in my own apartment so I can wash my clothes all the time and all that. It means alot to me for my family to have its own home.
