Filipino police recently dispersed liberal activists in the country after they were protesting against the president.

Manila protest (http://home.bellsouth.net/s/editorial.dll?bfromind=835&eeid=4972817&_sitecat=25&dcatid=0&eetype=article&render=y&ac=2&ck=&ch=ne)

So, what do you guys think of the situation there. I understand that there is also a major religious divide between the north and south, which has spawned groups such as Abu-Sayyaf.

those dispersed were organized by maoist groups. and dispersals always happen here, be they organized by whomever, even by right-wing political groups.

Maoist groups? The report said they were protesting the killing of a Bayan Muna member so I assumed that Bayan Muna organized it.

But it's quite interesting to have a member who is experiencing it personally.

I have several comrades that either live there now or lived there before.

Isn't Bayan Muna a Communist Party of the Phillipines front? I know Bayan USA is...

I stand in strong solidarity with the People's War in the Phillipines.

Groups in the Philippines have been saying they're going to overthrow Gloria for months and months now!

Is this actually something that might happen, or just loud-mouthing?

Is the NPA seriously going through with a renewed offensive to encourage her overthrow and if so how is this progressing?

I don't think so. Bayan Muna is a major political party. The Communist Party of the Phillipines heads the NDF though.

From their site:

Bayan Muna (People First) is a national political party composed mainly of workers, farmers, professionals and other progressive sectors that champions the cause of “New Politics, the Politics of Change” in the Philippines.

I do know that BAYAN is simply a coalition of "leftist" elements in the Philippines

You only hear about it when the press is interested.

Who in the West know about the massive abuses in Thailand, for instance?

I only know a bit about it because the webmaster at abandonware game site Home of the Underdogs is a young left-liberal investment broker (or something along those lines) from Bangkok and sometimes directs people to her blog when she updates the site. Sadly, she doesn't translate everything to English (Her written English is as good as any native speaker, but her intended audience is Thai-speaking.), which sucks when you're interested in what she had to say and can't read Thai.
