I was just wondering if there were any leonard cohen out there on the board.
Most famous song he wrote was probably hallelujah.
He's been my favourite musician and songwriter for some time now. I love the thought that obviously goes into every line that he writes, that it is so obvious that he was a poet before he was a musician.
I really enjoy the emotional mix thatyou get with his music but with so little elsewhere - his ability to articulate not ony 'legitimate' positive feelings, but also feelings of bitterness, resentment shame and vindictiveness whic h arise out of relations with other people.
Favourite songs of mine include
the master song
Famous blue raincoat
Stranger song
One of us cannot be wrong
and of couse hallelujah
am i alone here?

Cohen is one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, there are few, if any, lyricists who can match his depth...my favourate song is probably Chelsea Hotel #2...

I do like quite a lot of Cohen, although I have to be in the right mood. To be honest though prefer Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, all though this wasn't Cohen's best track (it was one of Buckley's though).

The songs I've heard by him have been utterly fantastic, unfourtunatley I haven't heard that many :( . Still, as I say, what I've heard is fabulous.

'and she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from china'
yes that is a great song. It was also key to his passage into the music business. He had become acquianted with Judy Collins - at that time already established as a muscian - and one night called her up from Canada and played it down the phone to her. She liked it and was actually the first person to record. Then one night she brought him out on stage. Being the emotional sould that he is, Leonard broke down half way through and said 'I can't go on'. He eventually managed to play it: needless to say the crowd loved it. The rest as they say is history.

I adore him...."The Future" is really good if you want to look at his later non-folk stuff.
