why does he wear a mask? is it to protect himself, or is it so that his face doesn't become an image like che?

I believe you mean delegate zero ;)... man that name is so bad...
Seeing as the masked image has pretty much become an image anyway I don't think that was really the intention...
I'm guessing it's just to hide his identity...

Its because he represents all the oppressed people in the world, he dosn't want to put a face to it because they are all different.

thats what i thought. like he doesn't want his face to become an icon or become bigger than the ideas themselves.

Delegate zero is what marcos wishes to be known as now that he is acting under the "other campaign" which is currently trying to build a non-electoral national leftist movement in mexico. this underscores the fact that the "other campaign" must be considered seperate from the EZLN.
And yes he wears a mask to promote the idea that "we are all zapatistas"

Yep and it's also to hide his identity too as well. If the government found out his true identity, his family may face some trouble.

Don't they already claim to know his true identity?

Ehhhhh sort of, except significantly more complex and less lame.
Read about it HERE (http://www.narconews.com/otroperiodismo/)

Yep, I don't have the name on hand but according to "legend" he was supposedly a radical university professor in Mexico City during the 70's.
Also I believe he got married to an international reporter covering the EZLN from within the Zapatista autonomous zone, so I don't think any "family" would be in immediate danger if his identity became widely-known, but who knows.

Yes.
While his identity is unknown, the Mexican government believes that his real name is Rafael Guillen and that he is a former Liberation Theology Jesuit who attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Marcos hasn't said anything about this so we'll just have to wait 'till he removes his mask.
so I don't think any "family" would be in immediate danger if his identity became widely-known, but who knows.
Raphael's family haven't said much and they haven't made overtures for Marcos to reveal himself or anything like that.

Actually, the reason as to why Marcos and the Zapatistas wear masks is because, throughout Mexico's history, indigenous and poor peoples have not had an identity, have been nobody, have been a shadow tossed away in the corners of society. I believe it is also to show common solidarity; that is, it does not matter who they are personally, but that it is a collective movement and they are equals as comrades and humans.

actually, marcos did say something about his supposed idendity, you know, the usual jokes. he said something to the effect of "i've heard they found out Marcos' idendity again, I hope they got it right this time. and i really hope he's handsome, i'm tired of this big nose" somethign like that, I dont have my copty of Ya Basta with me right now, but u get the point.
once i was talking with some cappie friends about marcos, and showing them some funny parts of Marcos' letters and one of them said ,"marcos is the funniest commie ever. thats why the soviet union got fucked up, lenin had no sense of humor." That was fukin hilarious

I remember that some of Lenin's attacks on Kautsky and Bernstein are pretty funny. That is, until you realize how completely bullshit (http://libcom.org/library/renegade-kautsky-disciple-lenin-dauve) they are.

Oops I think it was student, not professor.
Though frankly I would indeed expect him to be at least in his 50's.
