Recent threats and actions from the White House indicate the U.S. may be laying the basis for a new confrontation with socialist Cuba.

In the wake of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the Bush administration's promise of "endless war," there is plenty of reason for concern.

As Washington increases its backing for subversion and terrorism against the island, it is also menacing Cuba for defending itself from those same terrorist acts.

Sounds like America may invade Cuba. I really hope Bush is driven away from such an outrageous action. I strongly doubt that the UN will permit anything like a Cuban invasion. Cuba has been Socialist for decades, they're not breakin any international law (which wouldn't matter anyway since the police, i.e. America, does it often), and they're not being plagued by a tyrrant like Saddam Hussein. The world (enough of it for Bush) may buy this crap about Iraq, but I don't think they would accept an attack on Cuba. I'd be too costly, which may set Americans off from the idea. Especialy right after Bush spent tens of millions on the Iraqi invasion. He hasn't got the balls to invade Cuba.

Right on Klondike!! They want to invade because cuba has many lucrative businesses that haven't been corrupted by american thinking yet. Did someone say Haliburton: Cuban Division??? while we're at it, a little known fact: the average cuban is happy with their government and leader.

By the way i like ur quote. I say if u live in america ur not a virgin, cuz the government fucks us all up the ass!!

Bush has to invade Syria and Iran before he moves on to countries that can actually put up a fight. If he ever gets around to invading Cuba, it will be in his second term. However, I tend to agree with Klondike that people would be more skeptical about a war with Cuba. Unless, of course, Bush sets them up somehow as to convince the Americans that they are in imminent danger from Cuban attack. I wouldn't put it past him.

I hardly believe that such an invasion will take place. Bush doesn't have any plans to take over the world as President. The left tends to compare him to Hitler, but his state of mind is completely different. He doesn't have the will to create American colonies all over the world. Iraq has huge strategic advantages that Bush wanted to take advantage of. Iran also has this one great advantage - oil. North Korea has nuclear weapons, and so it will be easy to sell a war on them to the American public which will boost Bush's popularity. Syria is suspected of sheltering Iraqi officials, so it will also be easy to sell to the people a war on them.

Cuba, on the other hand, has no advantages like Iran and Iraq. The land is not rich in natural resources, and I don't believe that the small Cuban industry is of any interest to the American coorperations. Castro's popularity is high, and so American forces will not be accepted in Havana with cheers and flowers, but rather with guns and explosives. Saddam's unpopularity and the low morale of the Iraqi people contributed to the fact that there was no armed struggle against the American forces in Baghdad. In Cuba, as I stated, the situation is completely different.

Cuba has never been marked before as a country that threatens the stability of the Western World with weapons of mass-destruction. All countries on Bush's Axis of Evil - Iran, Iraq and North Korea - have been previously mentioned as countries whose regime may use WMD. Bush emphasized this in his Axis speech, but he didn't surprise anyone by marking those countries. Because Cuba was never mentioned in the same breath with the three "evil" countries, it will be very hard to sell a war on it.

Another element is Castro. When the US failed to prove that Iraq has WMD and that it is linked with terroist groups, it chose to focus personally on Saddam. When all else failed, the US claimed that it is liberating Iraq from its hated dictator. It supplied sufficient proof to back their claims that Saddam is an oppressive dictator, and even the radical left supported their claim. Saddam committed appalling acts of terror againt his people, and he never denied that he has committed such crimes. On the contrary, it was all documented on video by the Iraqi television, therefore, those proofs were irrefutable. This is not the matter with Castro. There are no hard proofs of any crimes committed by the Cuban to leader against his people, and claims that such crimes have been committed were never heard. There were claims that Castro infrindged in one way or another upon the freedom of speech, and that he has excuted resisters of the Socialist government. Those accusations are not enough to make the American public support a war. More than 70 percent of the Americans support the death sentence, and so they will not be concinved that executing someone is a crime. Also, Bush's popularity is immense, and he has personally signed many death sentences as Governor of Texas. The accusations regarding the freedom of speech are negligent.

Keeping all this in mind, I find it very doubtful that the US will attack Cuba in the next five years or so. Maybe, but just maybe, such an invastion will take place in a few year.
