I always hear politicians and goverment officials or just people in general criticize guerrila groups and their leaders for wearing ski mask or any type of head covering. they say "how can one negotiate, and trust a person who's face we can't see"
what's the real reason behind this? is it just for protection? or simply a "look"
and would you feel comfortable negotiating with someone wearing a mask?

Have you seen ETA's masks? Those are scary as fuck!
Anyway, rebel groups send representatives of some kind to negotiations, not a scary guy with an AK and a ski mask

It keeps their identities hidden, simple as that. Revolutionaries need protection.
The point of wearing masks is so if you're arrested, it will be difficult to charge anyone with an individual crime...since if everyone looks alike its not clear who threw what at what or set what on fire etc.
Its basically only useful then in areas that are under government control.
Also i suspect subcomandante Marcos wears a mask in part because he's a little embarrased that he's a white urbanite tryign to lead a bunch of indigenous people from the jungle.
Its sort of playing at militancy to wear masks when no ones doing anything illigal though.

They wear the masks for solidarity. Uniting with all the other faces around the world which the state doesn't care about.
