This may seem like a stupid question, but.. Why is there an American naval base in Cuba?
Thanks in advance,
Death.

The Cuban People have, since the great glorious Revolution of 1959, tried to remove the illegal military base from Cuban soil. Thus far, there has been no success.

It goes back to the Spanish-American war (1898.) The U.S. refused to leave until the Cuban parliament gave 'em Guantanamo (also the Platt amendment.)

The reason the US is maintaining a base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba is to prove the US has Military Superiority and can throw their weight around anywhere and at any time they choose - as if the rest of the world did not already know that.
For the same reason there are bases in a whole host of other “supposedly” sovereign nations like The Philippines, South Korea, Germany, Japan, Panama, etc. etc. – the list goes on and on – and now the newest place where US Military bases will be constructed and maintained is Iraq ----- surprise-surprise.
Does anyone see a pattern here?

The US has the base there so that they do not have to apply with International Law and US law, so they can detain anyone indefinetly and treat them as badly as they please.
The Cuban Government probably get back-handers for letting it stay or are forced to, I just don't know.
The American Embassy is located in the middle of Havana Square and Castro has never made them leave despite the CIA assasination plots and attempts on his life.
