So i was in school earlier today and i wanted to check the RevLeft forums...i type in the URL and my school blocked it!
Does anyone know of a great proxy site i could use so i could continue to support my comrades :hammer: !?
oh btw...they already blocked a lot of proxy sites "such as greenrabbit, pimpmyip, any proxy site with the name proxy in the url" just a shitload of them blocked.

No idea. My school recently blocked all of the good proxies..so I don't even bother trying to access "restricted" sites from school anymore.
The annoying thing is I couldn't do a search for "hitler" when I had to do a World War II project in history. I also couldn't read a poem by Allen Ginsberg because it said "marijuana" and "fuck" a few times when I had to do my english project.
School computer systems are the empitome of fascism. I suggest we bash them...

I've never been to a school where they had any kind of internet filter, but they seem to be quite the nuisance.

I think the only reasons schools block things is because it distracts students who are supposed to be doing work on the internet. (That’s my experience anyway)
EDIT: Typo

My college used to block loads of different sites, including RevLeft, but for the past 2 months or so it has strangely allowed access to a load of sites, which again include this one.

at my school it mostly blocks games, and entertainment and personal information sites like Myspace and other blog sites. But I feel that those should be blocked from schools.
I am however able to get on RevLeft, Anarkismo, Alternet, and even the ALF.
It is so surprising since we are in the middle of the Bible Belt as well... I feel privileged to go to a school that does not limit my political freedom.

My school did the same thing for a lot of sites, but me and my friends found a way around it (as long as your school computers run on windows).
First, click start at the bottom left. Found it? Good. :) Hover the mouse over the "All Programs" box and then hover over the "Accessories" and select "Command Prompt". type "ping", put a space, and then the website, in this case, "www.revolutionaryleft.com". It should come up with a string of numbers separated by periods. Type those numbers, with the periods, into the URL bar. It should go around the school's firewall.

My school used to block a lot of sites...the first time we got around it by having a proxy available, but this depended on my computer literate friend using his business :o one.
Later a couple of us (then) sixth formers came across the admin password... ;)
My college doesn't really block anything that I know of.

What are the numbers with the periods?
I've tried it and it all worked fine but I don't know what are the numbers with the periods. How I wish I could fool my school's filtering system. lol

It's the IP (Internet Protocol) of the site.

School filters suck, at our school they aren't that bad, luckily. Meaning, we can at least do research on them without net nanny getting cross. Instead, we are being monitored by the admins to see if we're watching anything "objectional". I was once reading up a bit on Stalin and got kicked for it. What the hell?! It could have easily been for a school project(okay, it wasn't...).

If you have people monitoring what you're viewing then use a proxy like bypassit.org, those will encrypt your activity.
My school doesn't block revleft or any other forums that I know of, but it does block a lot of game sites any myspace.

FoB: Thanks, but it doesn't matter anymore, I'm doing my exams and after that I'll finally be gone from that shithole. Anyway, they basically just sit behind their computers and have access to your account in sort of a gallery of thumbnails, and they can click on one of those to see and, if "necessary" control what you are doing(those sadistic fucks love to see innocent 1st years playing a game wondering why their mouse is acting weirdly). Also, they try to prevent the geeks from turning their systems against them by allowing them admin access so they can pull pranks on people from time to time as well. It's absolutely disgusting.

My school blocks loads of websites, although not this one. They don't block the Communist Party's site, but they do block the Young Communist League (not that it's ever updated). However, I'm past giving a shit as it was my last day today!!!!!, and I'm only going in for exams. Freedom and university here I come...

When I was in high school a lot of websites were blocked as well. When I went to ask the IT guy why certain sites were blocked that weren't "offensive" he said it was because they use a specific program that updated from a remote database, so he had no control over specific sites being unblocked besides completely doing away with the program (which couldn't happen for obvious reasons: porn).
There are a couple ways around it, one has been mentioned here. The second, the one that I used, is setting up your home computer (Assuming you have one) as a proxy. Once it is set up as a proxy you can use it to gain access to the internet from school.

hey guys if you want to get in to all of your sites just got to either unipeak.com or unipeak.net, you can get to any site from there, even if your school has blocked it

Hmm...One of my schools used to block porn sites but that was it. I've never come across filters that blocked political content. I guess the best thing to do is just log on somewhere else if you can't find an alternative method.

Attempting to block anything is really stupid, since anyone who is determined enough can usually get round such roadblocks. Pornsites are especially pointless to try and block because there are so many of them.

The average student wouldn't bother and can't get around that.

True. I doubt it's possible unless that .xxx thing for porn sites is enacted.
My current school also blocks all searches on image finders.

I just recently completed my courses at college but they had a filter too. They were fiarly liberal about it though, for example RevLeft and hotmail were not banned. Most proxies were though and websites with games on and porn and such.
It seems nasty and suppressive but I can understand why they do it. I mean how would you feel if you were trying to do some work and your pc is lagging because theres 50 odd people playing flash games using up the networks resources?
It is true that blocking educational content for no good reason (and I would class RevLeft as educational) is wrong but I doubt you could really complain about blocking revleft unless you were studying politics or sociology.
Don't mean to be killjoy but what you use school computers for should be aiding your study and not dicking about :P

Check peacefire.org. They release proxies every few weeks and send them to your inbox. Or for an easier solution, put tor/privoxy/firefox on a flash drive.

So did mine. They insisted you HAD to use the schools crap inefficient email site, so that they could monitor bullying, swearing and porn (and probably subversive messages). Nosy bastards.
Furthermore, I once did a search on Marx and... blocked; then I did a search on Hitler and it bloody allows it!
They obviously don't want the students to see that there is more to life than that of a dog.

I feel sorry for those of you with these problems. I never had these issues with my high school when I was attending. They basically only blocked porn sites (I don't think they paid much attention to what was being visited in cyberspace. They usually just sat around and did nothing, for the most part).
I don't know how proxies work, so I can't help any of you here. I would give them a try if they offer some chance of getting you on this site in school.

All of this makes me wonder what the high school I attended is like today. I went to high school in the 1980’s when there really wasn’t much to look at on the internet. However I must say that besides the copy of the “Communist Manifesto” given to my by my father, the first books on Marxism, feminism, etc were from my school library. I also remember our school librarian calling the United States a “fascist empire that is destined to crumble.” I believe he was in the BLA at one point.
Personally, I suppose I do see why schools would want to keep kids from chatting on the computers only to keep those who need it for schoolwork from waiting on long lines. I don’t see the point in keeping you from reading about Hitler or Stalin or whatever… and I really can’t understand a college doing it at all!

When I went to high school, the only "questionable" websites that the fascist program missed were gay porn sites. I have no idea why.

When I was about 13/14 we used to crowd around a computer in IT and find porn :D Now it seems rather a childish thing to do, obviously none of us would do that now, but I was the 'expert' who others would come to and ask advice from, as I spoke reasonable French and searching some stuff on google.fr in French wasn't filtered. And my Finnish friend would also search Finnish terms for us... ah it all seems so ridiculous looking back now.
As for filtering Stalin, Hitler and so on, our 6th Form (like college if you don't know) doesn't filter anything like that, as they are some of the topics we study for History. I've read several things on marxists.org whilst on my free periods, and some of the game sites can even be reached if you know how.
If Communist topics are filtered on your school/college computers, I'd register a complaint with the headteacher or the man in charge of your school computer network, as there is no valid reason why they should be.
