I think, this is a bogus idea. I thank god, it's only practiced in Capitalist Countries. It patronizes the minorities by giving them preferential treatment. It's a theory that is based on the idea that minorities are living in a White World and need preferential treatment to get ahead in society.

The idea of Communism is that not matter who you are, you work your hardest for society. Why should two white guys who are more qualified than two black guys, not get the job? That being said, why should two black guys who are more qualified than two white guys, get the job?

I think the help should stop. Not because they don't deserve it but rather, it's not our responsibility, we have given minorities what they need to get ahead like the Civil Rights Act. It's time for minorities to get their shit together. The Asians, are doing a good job.

All Affirmative Action is, is reverse discrimination. It's bullshit. People are too afraid of being racist. In turn, it makes them racist anyways.

I think, this is a bogus idea. . . .
One of the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action have been white women. Affirmative action is not just a race issue.

That said, we are living in a "white world," at least if you're talking about the US. Look at the composition of Senate or the CEOs/BoDs of the Fortune 500 companies. White supremacy is the main organizing principle of this country.

How many white people have gotten into the top schools in the US through legacy preferences (aka affirmative action for whites)? Many more than the number of Blacks and Chicanos who've gotten in through affirmative action.

Affirmative action is a needed corrective for the white male privilege that's built into the institutions of this country. It's not a very good one, true, but until something else comes along--like reparations--it's a gain that we're going to defend.

Preferential treatment? More like a token sum of what's owed to us for centuries of (super)exploitation and oppression.

Asians have benefited and continue to benefit from affirmative action, contrary to the right-wing myth. It is what's owed to us too, after the superexploitation building the Pacific railroad, the Chinese Exclusion Acts, the mob violence (much of it carried out by the white so-called labor movement), and the discrimination that continues to this day. Sorry, but we're not your "model minority" to be used against Blacks and Chicanos.

Attacks on affirmative action are racist because they're designed to prop up existant and continuing white privilege, which the Civil Rights Act didn't even come close to ending. Any type of socialism that doesn't deal with the legacy of slavery, genocide, conquest, and superexploitation of oppressed nationalities will be a Jim Crow socialism.

hopefully in a post-revolutionary society we won't need affirmative action but currently I think we do. Many minorities live in poverty and have little chance of success in a capitalist system compared to whites who many are suburban middle class and have a paved road to success. This helps society's less fortunate.

I believe we need to help minorities but in a different way. Instead of Affirmative Action, let's give job placement programs where people who are unemployed, are given manual labor jobs. White's came to this great land an flourished in a generation (with the help of slaves) so that is a bad example. Black and Mexican unemployment is higher than Asian unemployment, but the Blacks and Mexicans have been here longer. Think about that!

I don't think you understand the point of Affirmative Action. The purpose isn't to end unemployment. The purpose is to make up for the discrimination and inequality faced by people of color and to counter WHITE PRIVILEGE.

But, since we're throwing out hypothetical ways to "help minorities," how about this: white society should pay reparations for all the labor and land it stole from us.

What's your point? After immigration reform in 1965, a large part of the Asian population in North America had educational and professional backgrounds that put us in a position to benefit from Affirmative Action, much more than other oppressed nationalities. Asians and white women are the two groups that have gotten the most out of the program.

That's not an argument against AA, but an argument in support of it.

See, that's what I'm getting at. This program is put in place to compensate the blacks for their suffer under White Privilage. While it was bad what happened to them, it's in the past. It needs to stay there. We should be looking toward the future. In fact, some companies have a better system than Affirmative Action.

These companies are not conducting interviews, nor are they asking Race, Religion, Gender or Sexual Orientation on the application. Rather, they are asking for qualifications. Therefore, the most qualified person get's the job and not the majority or minority depending on they employer.

Slavery was bad but it happened a long time ago. Before any one of us was born, and it was only done in the South. Then there was racism that led to the Civil Rights Movement. While these were good things, we cannot dwell on them.

We need to advance as a united Human Race and move on. I'm sure, this argument will be irrelevant in 20 years, but now, we need to change to a non-flawed system like the one I mentioned.

We shouldn't end there though. Inner city reform, stricter truency laws, mandatory schooling until Grade 12. As time goes on, discrimination will end. Humans will be united by some event like first contact and discrimination amongst ourselves will end.
