what do you guys make of the comments the character of Scareface makes about communism?

"You wanna work 10, 12 hours a day you have nothing, you own nothing? You want a "chivato"(a rat) on every corner watching everything you do, everything you say?"

"all those people are like sheep, beeh!, beeeh!"

"you know the communist, they try to tell you how to think!"

"I kill a communist for fun, but for a greencard. Im gonna cut him up real nice"

TRUE?
or more ways to show the movie goers how communis "is bad"?

Ya kinda spelled that one wrong. Scarface not Scareface ;). Anyway I haven't really watched it but heard it was good.

Scarface actually made the Miami exile community pretty angry (I think it was filmed in LA to avoid crazy Miami protests) because it portrayed the exiles as murderous drug-dealers. So his comments were probably less to show how "bad" communism is to the viewer and more to show Montana's mindset. If they were trying to show the viewers how bad socialism (or Cuba) was, the main character probably would have been portrayed in a more flattering way.

Well it was the same film that say capitalism was getting fucked and taht at the start said that the communist fighters wouldn't leave ebcause they weren't getting paid, surley portraying them in a good light? Well either way it hardly made the main character look good and the hwole American dream spin's quite entertaining.

I have that quote in my sig lol.

Although Tony Montana achieves the American Dream, is he happy? I think Scarface can show that even if you have wealth and power, it won't necessarily make you a better or happier person. So you could look at the film in a sort of anti-capitalist light.

But it's a brilliant film regardless of how you look at it.

Castro emptied out the loony bins for the Mariel exodus, Tony Montana's base opinions only highlight the type of degenerate thinking of the exiles..

Exactly. These are comments coming from a drug dealing lunatic.

Great film though.

Scarface was not nearly as good as Carlitos Way, which was a much better film.

It's the way you can look at it.

What?! No way. Carlito's Way is an OK film but, compared to Scarface, it's too corny and, annoyingly, over-moralistic.

As for Scarface being an anti-communist film, i think Brian de Palma (the director of the film) does quite a good job in presenting the irony of Tony Montana's situation. Montana wants the American dream 'with a vengeance' but the 'American dream' on offer to a lumpen Cuban 'exile' in the US is, ultimately, that of degenaracy. In the end, for someone like Montana trying to achieve material gain in US society, capitalism really does mean getting fucked.

I'd say that Scarface is one of the greatest gangster stories in the history of gangster stories. de Palma is at his best and Pacino's performance is not far from being mesmerising. What a film.

i have a stigma about that flick. when i was a kid, i grew up around a lot of future gangbangers, and they were absolutely obsessed with scarface, it was probably the most common favorite movie amongst the boys. tho they all loved me, they still gave me shit cuz of the movie, used to quote it to me all the time.

I think it stands up far better than Carlito's way, and despite the cliche Pacino's is on fire! His Cuban accent is flawless..

I don't think this movie has any particular political message. I just think these lines were added to develop Montana's character.

Though I don't remember the movie completely so I'd have to watch it again to see.

We're talking about Oliver Stone, who pissed off all kinds of ameriKKKans when he made his recent film which spent a sympathetic day with Fidel Castro.

As for Carlito's Way, another masterpiece but not as good as Scarface. They also did a prequil to Carlito's Way which more or less sucked ass.

Well, its all subjective. I just prefer Carlito's Way, I don't know why really. I love both , but I think that the characters are perhaps a little more defined in Carlito's way.

Even though De Palma directed both Scarface and Carlito's Way, the films are completely different. While Scarface is more of a gangster flick, Carlito's Way is more of a love story, I think. You can't really compare these two movies on their story content.
