I reckon it will be China but hopefully it will be Cuba :-)

Japan is THE economic superpower right now, and I don't see that chaging anytime soon.

China WILL be the next supwerpower.

Countries with tradition like UK France and Germany will just remain medium powers but IF the European Union manages to trully integrate Itself Europe will be a real superpower.

Next If Latinamerica finally FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL UNITES!!!

IT could be come a power It has the potential.

And last but not list India.

It will probably be China, but for sheer manpower alone.

Their technological infrastructure at present still lags behind that of most of the rest of the "1st" world. What supercomputers and satellites they do have (for instance) were sold to them by Loral Industries about six years ago. Loral, not coincidentally, was the second largest contributor to both Clinton and Dole in 1996. (Before that, federal law prohibited sale of satellites or supercomputers to anyone. The industry was deregulated in 1997, however.) Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch was the the leading contributor that year. (source: Mother Jones, 1996 (http://www.motherjones.com/).)

In a near second is Russia, but they will never again see superpower status until they figure out how to operate a capitalist economy to their own advantage or realise the error of their ways and revert once again into socialism.

England is too small both in populus and geography to support the kind of military necessary to maintain superpower status. Japan's constitution (in accordance with international law and the surrender signed at the end of WWII) bars against the formation of a military or involvement in any military conflict save self-defense. They are by all accounts are already an economic and technological superpower.

Ehm, make that SECOND biggest economic power

China is definitely on it's way up there, they've made third on the global GDP list and should displace Japan for second place in less than a decade and America for first in about another decade after that if all goes well. Current growth rate is over 7% a year.

Frankly there is no other country in the world that even comes close to having the required growth potential to outclass the U.S. in economic and political terms.

Japan is starting off another two decades or so of recession, or they could go for bankrupting their economy for about ten years and be back on their feet. But no one can afford to take that political gamble, beacuse they might be voted out of office before annything gets better.

Indias economy is totally in shambles, they have the high-tech stuff going well but without basic infrastructure coming first they're just building a big house on no foundation, power outages and diseases and general difficulties in operating in India are not getting any better, and even if they were it would take a long time before they'd be competitive.

Russia is settling in for yet mor shit in Chechnya, the economy is run by bandits and the economic policies of the government are dependant on not tipping the treasury over into the bright red. They even tax investment like income, badly hurting legitimate investment opportunities while bolstering organized crime, all because they can't afford to suddenly stop having that money come in.

Cuba is far too small, even if they had the best GDP in the world per capita they wouldn't make a dent in the big players.

England is again too small and it's economy too established to give any opportunity for the kind of growth we're talking about.

The EU is somewhat larger, and has more potential with all the Eastern countries coming it. However, it is not looking too likely that they'll unite on a common fiscal and monetary policy any time soon. And even if they did, that would only be the very start of the kind of explosion of growth needed.

I don't think the EU could legitmately be called a "superpower" since it is an amalgamation of countries working towards common economic goals. Unless it changes that focus and instead begins working towards uniting the whole of Europe under one centralized political and military leadership with the EU at the front, it never will. As I understand it, the term superpower not only refers to economic and and technological prowess, but military as well. As long as the member nations are responsible for their own security, the EU won't fit this definition.

'Japan's constitution (in accordance with international law and the surrender signed at the end of WWII) bars against the formation of a military or involvement in any military conflict save self-defense. They are by all accounts are already an economic and technological superpower.'

The military situation in Japan is changing, with the increase in their forces. However, their country is somewhat isolated. I doubt they will become a superpower with a population of 125,000,000 or so.

I agree with Kapitan. I think Russia will put itself back together. Especially after all the crap the U$ has been pulling around the globe.

They are still militarily very strong. The question is, what will the U$ do to them if they sense Russia getting strong again?

That still doesn't address the main issues in Russia, what's going to happen to the crime syndicates that are growing in power every day? What is going to happen to the economy, which is committing suicide slowly because they can't afford to change the economic policies to make them more profitable?

Sorry, I stand by my post, there is only one country in the world with even a minute chance of equaling the power of the United States. And even that won't happen for a couple of decades, if it happens....

I think basically it's gonna take such a long time that unforseen events are going to affect the outcome severely. Just too many variables...

1 dream, the USSE (United Socialist States of Europe) compromising of the former USSR and all of europe, under one socialist collective, think about it, it would be completly self-reliant and able to crush the U$ without even resorting to war, instread, grasdually increasing the tarifs on all the US's major inports and exports, until even the "great" capitalist economy of the US is dragged lifeless and weak with millions starving, civil war will break out and with the USSE arming the faction most towards joining it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

*awakens from deep sleep, and realizes, it was all a fuking dream*

I agree with wolfie, that would be awesome. Pancho Villa will not make Mexico a super power unless Zapata is ressurected as well. Together with Marcos, they will rule the earth!!! (or at least Chiapas)

I'm going with China. They're system's stable, unlike India or Russia, they're big and rich in resources, unlike Japan and Britain, but they need to organise their resources more efficiently.

think about it,russia is historicly a european country.communism seperated them, but most eatern european countrys want to join.russia might be up in a decade or 2.I mean who would have ever thought that turkye ,former invader of europe, would want to join?and since the US power is now definetly the biggest,it would be smart to have a big europe.

The USSE WOW! what a great thought, if only that was true it would be brilliant

praxis1966
25th April 2003, 22:15
USSE? Nice idea, but it'll never happen. Not in any of our lifetimes. Even if it did, I highly doubt that it would go to war with the U.S. If anything, another cold war would most likely result. Something similar to the one between the U.S. and the Soviet Union from WWII to circa 1991.
