Senate Votes English as 'National Language'
Bill Keeps in Place Multilingual Laws

After an emotional debate fraught with symbolism, the Senate yesterday voted to make English the "national language" of the United States, declaring that no one has a right to federal communications or services in a language other than English except for those already guaranteed by law.
The measure, approved 63 to 34, directs the government to "preserve and enhance" the role of English, without altering current laws that require some government documents and services be provided in other languages. Opponents, however, said it could negate executive orders, regulations, civil service guidances and other multilingual ordinances not officially sanctioned by acts of Congress.

Thats sick. USA is supposed to be a nation of immigrants, a melting pot of cultures....but obviously not anymore.
To be honest, I think the white english-speaking Elite of the US are shitting themselves because it is predicted that by 2050, 1/5 of the USA will be speaking spanish. Guessing thats why they suddenly cracking down on illegal immigrants and this 'national' language shit.

This sends a clear message concerning the immigration debate.
This won't affect bilingual education will it?

The last lines of the inscription of the base of the Statue of Liberty read:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
I guess we just ought to tear the fucker down, what with this bill and the militarization of the U$-Mexico border and what not.

More importantly, when will Wikipedia start using European English. <_<
On the issue at hand, this is obviously a swipe at the current immigrant movement; yet one gets the feeling that if Congress is attacking on this front, then they must feel they are somehow impotent on the other fronts.
That they've resorted to a somewhat symbolic attack (surely most federal communications are already in English?), makes me think that they fear a more direct attack on the immigrant community....like, for instance, mass deportations. And the reason they fear doing this, is because the immigrant community has shown that it is willing to mobilise.

Don't tear it down. That's still relevant. Just remember that although the "tempest-tost" are important, the capitalists are even more so! Hooray for the Downward Spiral system!

Well in the slang sense it doesn't really mean much about sex, more like "throw away" or "get rid of" which is what your body does with "poo."

The majority speak english... whats so wrong with it being considered the official language? I agree the timing is fucked haha.
But still, you can't avoid the fact that nearly everyone here speaks english. its on the street signs, billboards, television radio. It is the language of the states.
It is good for tourists to know what to expect so they don't learn spanish to come to find out that no one they talked to even spoke the language.

Directly translated, it means "go to the shit."
But it is probably easier equated to "fuck off" or something similar.

I doubt he ever will, REPO
Also, this is just more horseshit from our government in the attempts to create a more monolithic White American culture.

The USA can't get over their myth of isolation.
The land where no one has to think worldly.
We say this is or that never happens here, and we're so sure of it, though we only have had 300 years of history as a republic.
You say we're a melting pot, well when you become a citizen you lose your cultural identity.
This is fucked up like America is some kind of experiment for the rest of the world.
This will comeback and bite us in the ass.

No, it's the language most of us speak. That doesn't mean it's "official".
And this whole issue is not about being official. It's about making a political point against the immigrant movement that's developing.

The interesting thing about this proposal is that it means absolutley nothing in practicality : it has no real bearing, it isn't any type of enfoceable law or anything like that. All it is, literally, is an expression of xenophobia and America's racist (or more likely fearful) attitudes towards immigrants.
So when will Bush learn correct English?

Well, what will happen in schools for example. Will kids be reprimanded for speaking a foreign language? I have some friends with whom i associate in spanish everyday and I would feel indignant if soembody told me that I couldnt speak spanish. This is one step towards fascism i beleive. This must have been pushed through by the radical conservatives in office.
You see, they have this "grand scheme" for America if you will. One is Christianize America, and amongst many other, abolish all foreign languages. Now, i dont believe that they will ever get there, but thats the road that theyre taking.

What bloody ponce with a pony tail, armani suit, blue glasses and red braces came up with the term "radical conservatism"
Definition of radical:Favoring or effecting fundamental or revolutionary changes in current practices, conditions, or institutions
Definition of conservative:Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.

"radical", refers to "root". As we are communists, we are radicals and would like to see "root' change, not reform. They would like theocratic fascism, which is "root" change.

So I guess now the Senate wants to control how, what, and which language ppl speak within its borders...a lil on the fringe of totalitarianism
However IMO this is more a symbolic move than anything else
Its not like its gonna change how ppl speak around the country
I guess they're aim is to supress in any way the current immigrant movement
