The Free Peoples Movement branch in Hartford three years ago began as a small group of two people. Since then, our membership has grown to a collective of near fifty members and hundreds world wide. Our group in Hartford has participated in many protests, activities, and direct action for change in the community.

Members first began by expanding Food Not Bombs on Saturdays and working together to keep it up. Although we do not officially run Food Not Bombs we encourage FPM members to volunteer and help strengthen and take part in the organization.

There is a clear separation between Food Not Bombs and the Hartford FPM. We encourage solidarity between the two groups. We have also put in hundreds of dollars to help the (at first struggling but now thriving) Saturday group.

We have also shown solidarity with the local Hartford Independent Media Center and have donated earnings of several benefit shows to their behalf. It is important that members participate in alternative media and although we do have our own paper; the Free Press, it doesnt have the currant space to report on local events such as what goes on around in Hartford. This is why we feel that the Hartford Undercurrent; the paper of the HIMC, is an important voice in Hartford and we urge members with a thirst for alternative news to take part to report what is really going on around the city of Hartford.

During the last several months our branch has worked with the C.L.A.S.H Collective to open and run Behind the Rocks Infoshop, a resource center at the Green Party office. After a short notice in May we where told by the Greens to leave the space.

This isnt that much of a disappointment; we actually welcomed the news to some degree. The space was small and had limited uses. We look to expand to a new location, change the name to possibly just infoshop or something else and use it as a caf with open mic space, resource center and book store with much more of a visual appeal and larger space to work out from.

The infoshop is going to be a part of a bigger project. We are looking to raise at least $150,000 in the course of a year purchase property to provide housing, offices, two store fronts, and several community gardens in Hartford. We are looking at different options of getting hold of money such as taking out a mortgage in which we will be able to pay off over several of years.

This is where we are now. We are looking at where we should take the next steps of our organization. Currently the Connecticut Free Peoples Movement along with every other national and international FPM branch has begun what would be the largest FPM project to date. The project includes strengthening our branch in the Dominican Republic and the construction of a pedagogical institute (in which quality education will be provided free of charge) in the Dominican Republic.

The construction of the pedagogical institute will include a school, houses and a medical center when fully constructed. The volunteer teaching staff will also participate in literacy and other educational campaigns throughout rural parts of the country. Members from all branches will be making there way down to the Dominican Republic to aid in construction.

In efforts to aid the international FPM project the Hartford Free Peoples Movement will send down a group of people to the Dominican Republic late July or August to participate in the construction.

Although we are participating in an international project we also need to keep focus on our community. That is why we are calling for everybody to help out with the Hartford project.

We also realize that we need to grow in numbers to make change more possible. This is why we would like to make it clear that we operate through FPM not as just another organization in the interests of the organization itself or for the members in which the organization has but rather we work in the interests of the people. The FPM goal is to grow as a collective of people with the common interests of Freedom, Equity and Justice so that collectively we can put focus on one thing, change and liberation from capitalism.

This doesnt draw a line at what you represent politically. We represent an anti-capitalist front and call for Socialist change. Our path is Socialism and its principles. Whether you are a Socialist, Communist, Anarchist, we call on unity among anti-capitalist with Socialist ideals.

Our manifesto describes our organization in such a way that it is impossible for a person of the people to reject. Get involved in something of a greater mass and take your part in changing society and fighting for freedom, equity and justice. Read the manifesto and make the decision for yourself or just take a look at what we are trying to accomplish.

Become an active member if you want to get involved directly as a member of your community or choose to become a supporting member to take a less than a direct role.

Speak with people in an organization you are already part of and try to get involved with the FPM to bring your ideas to the table so that your voice in the community can be heard.

We call on unity for the soul purpose of accomplishing liberation. In Americas second poorest city there must not be silence among the proletariat class, poverty is not freedom, poverty is in itself a form violence, doing nothing about it in itself is a form of violence. We need food, housing, medical care, education, we need true representation of the people and we need action, we need to begin providing our community with these basic needs in which today it is a struggle to obtain.

It all begins with unity in Hartford. Our first project, a project of the people in the community is will show just that, unity for the fight for liberation. We are looking to obtain apartments in which have been abandoned for years and years only to renovate them and give them to people who have no home. On top of that these people will have a job; if not already, under some storefronts within the apartments (Caf, bookstore, resource center) or as maintenance to the apartment (as a start to the project). As part of this project we will provide residents with free healthcare, food and the basic needs of life that no human being should be left out from. The basic needs of life that over 30% of the people in Hartford struggle to grasp on to.

This would be the first step; the second step will be expanding this network and building schools, hospitals, and more homes, jobs, resources to the community. This is called taking community control and once we develop this community control we must work together as a community to free ourselves from what capitalism has left us with. We will from these communal grounds rise up and have a base in which leads by example. Our movement will be one of the people and we will be showing this.

This is our future as free people in Hartford, this is what our organization is looking to accomplish.

FREEDOM EQUITY AND JUSTICE!
