Yes, I don't think we need any more proof that the police are not around to 'protect' us, but to serve the needs of the ruling capitalist class. I'm willing to bet most of these victims are enemies of the police, not just members of the 'unruly gangs'.

I was a friend with a Brazilian foreign exchange student from Sau Paulo a while ago. He said that the police go around at night shooting and killint homeless teens! That's the reason my my mother didn't want my brother to go down to Brazil with him.

I'm from Sao Paulo, the violence is actually much worse in Rio all around.
The violence comes from prison gangs that grew out of leftist organizing methods adopted from activists imprisoned during the dictatorship. Some of their rhetoric is leftist but they're involved in the drug trade and that kind of shit. They definitely do represent a mass movement of the poor and in some areas run parralel governments.
I posted a thread in another forum about this (http://www.redanarchist.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=72;start =0)
If this is a crackdown on gangs, there will probably be reprisals. Nachie is right, a lot of the gangs are pretty powerful. I recall that Red Command actually was able to shut down most of Rio for a day in protest and had running street battles with the cops (and RC pays its members better than the cops).

Really? I'm living in Brasilia right now. :)
I heard that it's getting pretty bad out there, I have a friend who goes to school in São Paulo and he told me about it briefly.

I also have a friend in SP and he told me things were really bad. The gangs killed a cop not to far from his home. He also said their was a scare that the gangs might attack the subway so he had to walk home from work, he walked 3 hours :(

And also, it's true about the killing of street kids.
They have death squads that go around shooting homeless children. I believe this is common in Rio and São Paulo. Not only is this disgusting but extremely tragic.

I've read that such killings take place in mexican citys, like Tijuana, as well. One reason for this is that some police are ex-gang members.

It seems that the police have become vigilante squads, taking justice into their own hands. This is terrible since they can't tell the difference from an innoncent citizen and a criminal.
