That's right, the Internet may soon belong to the few and the rich, the media barons and the telecommunications ogres.

And we're always so critical of nations that censor the internet, we may loose access to it if we aren't "good people"!

hmmm....it would be easy to set up another internet style network. nothing can steal the internet from us, we could just host websites/forums/movies/music/etc from old pcs if we had to. who needs domain names anyway :P

Conspicy theory.
They said they can "steer" us to places they want us to go. Doesn't say that they can make us go there. As long as the consumer is well educated, which people are starting to become, the harder it will be to force people to buy other products. Not to mention that having to use the "slow" interent doesn't mean a thing. The problem is that the costs for internet provding are extremely high, and lets face it, everyone's in it to make a buck.
As for blogging (since I figure thats whats the final nail in the coffin) There isn't anything wrong with the printed word.

The US government criticizes China for their interenet firewall, but they have tried to get Google to turn over search records, not to mention the entire NSA phone spying program.

Ever heard about Echelon? It intercepts over 3 billion e-mails, telephone calls and fax each day. It is perhaps not so shocking to know that this system is practiced by the US, UK and Australia (mostly), and they cover the whole world.
Plus, the laws of spying on citizens go out the window (no surprise). Since the US "can't" spy on Americans, it lets the UK spy on them instead, same with the UK and the Australian governments. But of course they also have their own spy-complexes, specially now after 9/11 and the so-called "War on Terror".

But I believe the reason that they also criticizew China and Cuba for internet censorship is to show Americans how horrible "communism" is, which of course, for anybody living in America, can see the effects of these blalant lies. Seems like these bastards only talk about "freedom" when its convenient for them huh?

actually, one of the plans to privatize the internet, supported by companies like at&t would be to do to it as was done to radio and television in their early days, and essentially privatize the whole thing within a multi-tiered structure. thats fact.
worse, alberto gonzales is now talking openly about arresting reporters, tho that wouldnt actually be new nor would pressuring news businesses to purge reporters, but definitely a worrisome development

China has an extremely heavy censorship (even various searches, for example "Cultural Revolution" is censored and forbidden), and in Cuba, there are various restrictions.
In Vinales, for example, internet access for cubans were prohibited 15.12.04. Or at least, they were prohibited from using the internet on netcafes, which basically means few to none have access.
I don't see why we should not criticize the Chinese and the Cuban government for this.

Yeah we can (not that it makes any difference)
It's just it would be hypocritical for Capitalist governments to critiscize China and Cuba for restricting internet access when it might end up being privatised here
