May I Have This Dance?

The fathers and daughters paired off as they entered the elegant ballroom of the five-star Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. The dads wore suits or tuxes, the young ladies beautiful ball gowns.

This was the fourth annual Father-Daughter Purity Ball, an event sponsored by Generations of Light Ministries last March. The ball featured an inspirational ballet by the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs, dinner accompanied by chamber music and ballroom dancing until midnight.

The 100 father-daughter guests some dads brought more than one daughter, and some of the daughters were as young as 4 came from around Colorado, and a few from as far away as Pennsylvania. The highlight of the evening was when the dads signed the Covenant of Purity and Protection, witnessed by their daughters. (See The Pledge, below.)

This is not a debutante ball, but an elegant spiritual celebration that honors what God has created in fathers and daughters, said Lisa Wilson, who with her husband, Randy, founded Generations of Light. (Randy is a Focus on the Family employee.) We know that the covenants made that night will influence generations.

Text of "Covenant of Purity and Protection"

I, (daughters name)s father, choose before God to cover my daughter as her authority and protection in the area of purity. I will be pure in my own life as a man, husband and father. I will be a man of integrity and accountability as I lead, guide and pray over my daughter and as the high priest in my home. This covering will be used by God to influence generations to come.

Yes. It's crazy.

I'm glad my dad hasn't done that to me yet.

This looks like they are guilt tripping their daughters into not doing "immoral" things with guys.

Stuff like this makes you reflect on how easily you can brain wash people using religion.

It might backfire, like those girls in texas (?) who wore "chastity" rings. Apparently now they suffer from extreamely high teenage pregnancy, higher than before the introduction of the ring scheme.

I, (daughter’s name)’s father, choose before God to cover my daughter as her authority and protection in the area of purity.

Wow, patriarchy, paternalism, misogyny, religious fundamentalism, and creepy incestuous domination all wrapped up in one. <_<

You've really got to wonder how one practically "protects" another's "purity", but it's even more disturbing to ponder how a "purity authority" actually manifests. Frankly, I get the feeling that a lot of these "high priests" are just a little too interested in their daughter's vaginas for any kind of "healthy relationship" to develop.

Luckily, this kind of perverse "ritual" is hardly reflective of the mainstream of any community. There's always a reactionary fringe in any society, this one just happens to be uniquely creepy.

Oh well, at least this time the wackos are overtly nuts, it makes our job so much easier!

:o what-the-fuck

that is profoundly fucked up even for christian fundementalists. Men parading their daughter's virginity around at a ball, while simultaneously treating them as their sexual property that they have "authority in the area of purity" over sounds like something out of a medieval history text book...Rather than having them dance with boys their own age or something, having a dance where fathers take their daughters basically as dates, is even more perverted, its like the whole patriarchial obsession about their children's sexuality is part of an incest fantasy. They probably don't want their daughters sleeping with *other* men because it would feel like 'cheating' on them!

These guys should seriously be institutionalized...social services shouldn't let fathers like that around four year old kids.

I may be asking a dumb question here, but how do you protect the sexual "purity" of a four year old girl?

I mean, aside from the possibly of sexual assault occurring, which is not something you can really "protect" against; especially as trusted family members/friends tend to be the ones doing the assaulting....how else could these girls "purity" be threatened? Surely they don't think that four year old girls actually want to engage in sexual activity? Do they???

Fucking wacko Christians.

They don't, and that's why they extract the vow early. I'm guessing a teenage girl would not make a vow to "protect her purity" until marriage.

Yah really, its easier to intimidate kids when they're young and have less social exposer outside of their crap religious families...

Have people looked at this site though? Its so wacky:

http://www.family.org/prayer/

apparently Dr. Dobson has people praying for him 24 hours a day! He actually convinced dozens of religious freaks to spend the hours hours of 3am to 4am praying for him as part of their "prayer shift" so he'd have 24 hour prayer coverage lol.

The guy is a total douchebag, you should look for commentarys from people who've left Focus on the Family. I'm going to try and find a particularly empty shift and pray for him to get hit by a bus.

In my experience, the more a woman has had religion forced down upon her, the more open or permiscuous she is when she gets older. I love that haha (I mean in the sense that it totally contradicts all the stupid bullshit that she was taught to live by).
