Two days ago, I decided to break free from the chains of religion and superstition.
Thanks to you guys and infidelguy.com, I became an atheist. So far I've been taking some heat from the religious right on planetthinktanks and just about everyone at my school who knows. But thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it. Atheism gets taking used to, but as they say, "The truth sets you free." :)

Great news, and congratulations for your decision! :)
A clear mind, free from irrationality, is a prequisite for true freedom. Arguing with theists feels unrewarding at times, but people like you Monica make it feel worthwhile. I bet the Redstar2000 Papers had an impact on your choice? ;)
I've never been really religious myself, but I didn't realise how important completely dismissing unprovable, irrelevant shit was. With it gone, the truth remains, much easier to observe.
The road towards our goal; a new, self-confident and fearless mankind, in control of our common destiny and constantly working together as sisters and brothers for our joined benefit and improvement, lays open and clear to see.

Welcome to the materialist world, where your non-theistic decisions actually change things :D
Yes, welcome to the real world. Your actions WILL have an effect here, and you WILL be able to judge yours and other's actions based on merrit, rather then what some non-existant entity in the sky and ground thinks.

Congratulations, Monica! :D
Yes, you'll get some flak from people for your decision...but just throw it back in their faces.
If you get into any "internet squabbles" and need any help, just let us know and we'll be delighted to "jump in".

Congratulations on your decision to deconvert.
Might I suggest some light entertainment?
Fundies say the darndest things (http://fstdt.com/)
That's wonderful to hear. :)
I know that we can be somewhat "hard" in pushing atheism around here, but that's only because we genuinely know that it's the best available option. Religious visitors to this site always insist, however, that we will only "alienate" the "faithful", so it's nice to see that we've had a positive impact!

Good for you MonicaTTmed. Religion is nuts without science.
I remember catholic school when i was little. We had to go to church every cold monday morning at 8:15 for morning prayers. I remember thinking: "These freaks are nuts!" :o but was too shy to say anything.

The longer you are an atheist, the more evident it is just how incredibly silly religion really is haha.

I recently had a breakthrough myself a few months ago. I still go to church to keep up appearances. But people who know me outside of church know I'm a materialist.

Isn't that kind of an elitist statement?
Don't get me wrong, I am a staunch atheist. I find religion to be an absurd concept, an explination for the unexplainable. An imaginary friend for adults. I find religion to be one of the worst merchants of destruction in human history, and I do believe that it would be incredibly healthy for the species if it faded away.
BUT, to claim atheism to be the "best available option" seems elitist to me. I agree that it is the best available option, as would the vast majority of the users of RevLeft. But this is opinion, not fact. I am not arguing that their opinion is usually "valid," because most of the time it is lingual-diahhrea.
But when we start claiming our opinions as facts, we begin to make ourselves look like we fart higher than our own asshole, like we are the "elite." It seems to alienate people who are just beginning to learn about RevLeft politics (when I joined, I felt that way on these boards), and rather than claim "THIS IS STUPID," we should give them all the information to come to that conclusion themselves. If they are sensible about this kind of stuff, theres no doubt that they will.

Well done.
When I joined Rev Left, I was a hardcore Christian fanboy. Then I started reading websites people linked to in the Religion forum, and I thought that believing in Christianity, as opposed to other religions which also do not provide evidence for their beliefs was idioitc. So I started to call myself an agnostic, round about the time we had our last Rev Left Chit Chat survey. Then around about Christmas, I realised the logic of being an atheist.
Now I've managed to convince everyone at school that Hitler was the reincarnation of Jesus.
Quite a change in my beliefs.

Why? There is no relativism with ideas. Atheism is clearly what makes sense if you take a materialist viewpoint.
But when we start claiming our opinions as facts, we begin to make ourselves look like we fart higher than our own asshole, like we are the "elite."
Atheism is based on fact, scientific fact. An atheist scientific explanation IS worth more than a religious explanation for things. That may "sound" elitist but it's just fucking true.

Then why do we have people starting threads here proclaiming their atheism and thanking us?
