Smashing Pumpkins - I think Tonight, Tonight is a fine example of this as is Today even
Weezer - Buddy Holly is a good example as is Say It Ain't So
Right who else has suggestions?
By the way anyone to claim Rites of Spring can go get fucked! That's not emo to me I draw a line between inception and practice in the same way that The Kinks weren't Punks.
By the way Emo is shit; but this is an interesting idea to me and I want to see if anyone else can pinpoint emo before emo or emo-ish stuff that's not technically emo.

I think all the music I listen to is pretty emotional.
Unless it's electronic or something in which case maybe it's just crazy robot anti-emotions.
The only band you mentioned that has anything to do with the word "emo" is Rites of Spring, which was an early emo band.

 Rites Of Spring fucking rock
I'd say maybe some stuff by Husker Du - "Never Talking To You Again" specifically
The Replacement's "If Only You Were Lonely" certainly echoes Emo
There's some other stuff from that 80's underground period that certainly influenced early Emo but nothing that would have the same whiny quality

Emo isn't about being sad/whiney/depressed/overly emotional
It's about expressing your emotions through music.
Now, when talking about music you've got differnt "waves" of music. Example, Ska has first, second and third waves, all which have a very differnt sound.
Emo "waves"
Old school emo
Indian Summer
Julia
Moss Icon
Rites of Spring
The Hated
Hardcore Emo
Jeromes Dream
Orchid
Reversal of Man
Usurp Synapse
Chaotic Emo
Honeywell
Mohinder
Portraits of Past
Saetia
Swing Kids
Union of Uranus
Clever/modern emo
City of Caterpillar
Circle Takes The Square
Envy

Mind you, you can call music whatever you want. But if you want to be right, take the action to research the truth and form your opinions from there. Music isn't something you listen to and decide if it's a genre or not, when the only information you have on that genre is from the radio/media.
Rites of Spring were clearly the seminal Emo band.
Kingface, Sunny Day Real Estate.. Whatever.

Perhaps, but it certainly has created a very distinctive, I hate to say it, 'genre' of its own.

I think Fear Factory's Transgression could possibly count as an emo-ish track - it's just verse after verse of pure bile.
The lyrics don't quite put it across, but hopefully you can get it:
One nation of gods, divided by faith,
A nation is divided by faith,
Witness deliberate war of attrition,
Judge me not, lest you be judged,
Eyes are blinded, blinded by violation,
I hate your contention,
I hate your violation,
I hate your corruption,
I hate your life destruction,
I am your enemy...
Witness deliberate war of attrition,
Kill my mind, my mind is the weapon,
Words are banned, these words meant to enlighten,
I hate your contention,
I hate your violation,
I hate your corruption,
I hate your life destruction,
I am your enemy,
I will resist,
Endlessly...

The thing is, just about every band has an "emo" track, because well everyone has emotions.
The differnce between genres, for the most part, is within the techinical aspects of music. That link I gave tells of specifc characteristics of emo genre and sub-genres.
Contrary to what most believe, music isn't simply classified by what you think it sounds like. It's a somewhat deep dive to understand what exactly classifies music. But as far as genralizations go, it's okay to call a band punk/pop/rock/country/rap/etc. But when you go into more specific genres like emo/hardcore/metal/indie/etc, you have to analyze the actual music beyond it's sound.
I'm personally just sick of people throwing around the term "emo" at all of these bands, describing a annoying whine and complainitive lyrics, then calling "dashboard confessional" fake emo. It creates this mystical genre that no band really fits into, because the only bands that make that kind of sound are popular and "mainstreem indie pop rock".
And beyond that, the term begins to describe people who cut, are depressed, or have a distinctly differnt hairstyle. Which is absolutly opposite to the music, if you happen to listen to any of it. Infact, most emo is really hardcore, fast, and distorted. Nothing at all like a suicidial depressed kid who spends his days crying and cutting.
Not that this is anything new. I'm sure you all know of the slanders the term "gay/fag(got)" have portrayed in todays society.

You killed my thread by being all emo about it... man.
It was a terrible, terrible thread to begin with, just showed a lack of understanding about history of emo.

The term "emo" is one not enough people can properly understand, and they way it is thrown around is totally wrong. What is emo? emotional. what is a Emo person? An emotional person. WHAT? We are humans. humans are emotional beings. SO Emo music is music about emotion? Is this not what music is about? expressing feelings and points of views. So sometimes we write happy songs. Sometimes it may get political and yes since we can't always be happy chappies sometimes it gets sad. I agree there are some bands who say things in their songs that are totally irresponsible to say lyrics about killing people and slashing themselves. Though it's a serious issue it's sing about it since as a singer/songwriter you are a influencial person. Songs which are "emo" are ones that constantly relate to these dark themes of death, pain etc. But thats it.

Bullshit. Metallica wrote songs about dark and sad things. I guess they're emo.

rites of spring were first wave screamo, followed later by saetia and orchid types.
This thread is fucking stupid, I mean let's say the kinks claimed to be punk 15 years before any of the bands the Floyd knows. Then maybe we have a comparison between this thread and Rites of Spring.

To be honest I actually think that Papa Roach started the emo genre with their song "Last Resort".

Oh yes. Definatly. Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort. For sure it is... Same with Metallica it can all be classified as Emo. But who cares? Honestly. I'm sure nearly every band, group, soloist, songwriter has at least ONE "emo" song somewhere. But it doesn't matter. If we enjoyed the song then whether it's "emo" or not shouldn't be a concern. If you like the music then listen and enjoy, nothing else should matter

The reason genres exist is so you can find more bands you may like.
"I like a lot of hardcore punk, since this band is called hardcore punk I will listen to them and I might like them too"

Sunny day real estate started it all
boy george was pretty emo
the cure
But this is so stupid because so much music is just really emotional. It is meant to be.
It started years before Sunny Day Real Estate. Diary came out in 1994, bands had been called emo since c. 1986

WTF is it with this site and this emo thing? It seems to crop up in every second thread. At this point it almost rivals the Leninist/anarchist blight
