Deputies: Teens Talked About Crime On MySpace
May 11, 2006
LAURENS, SC -- Investigators in Laurens County are looking into the online profiles of five teenage boys arrested and charged in a case of church vandalism.
Deputies say MySpace helped solve that case and locate the teens.
WYFF News 4's Elise Hu found out some of the boys charged have extensive profiles on the Web site.
Friday night, someone tore through the New Durbin Baptist Church.
The Laurens County sheriff estimates the vandals did about $20,000 worth of damage.
Tuesday, five Upstate teens were charged with the crime.
Most are students at Hillcrest High School.
Cory Ambrose is one of the five teens facing charges. On his MySpace profile, he described himself as an "anarchist."
His friend and fellow suspected vandal, Matt Perry also has a profile page. On Perry's page, he wrote: "I hate God, but I love making fun of him".
Perry also called himself an anarchist.
What got deputies even more interested were publicly viewable messages from a third implicated teen, Nick Nonno. On Sunday, Nonno sent Ambrose these messages:
"Have you seen the news man?"
"Dude you're a crazy kid man, Friday night kicked (expletive".)
Nonno also wrote a message to Matt Perry.
It said:
"This weekend was so (expletive) crazy. Dude we went back up there... you know what I'm talking about I don't want to say it on here but yeah we went up there and cops were all over the place. It was insane."
Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said Internet entries can sometimes stir kids to do the wrong thing.
"Kids get on the internet, start talking about wanting to do this, wanting to do that, and forming clubs and having the same ideas," Chastain said. "And next thing you know they might talk each other into getting together and doing exactly what we saw happen over the weekend at the church."
All five teens were released from custody Wednesday.
Their next hearing is in July.
Under conditions of the bond, they can't contact each other in any way, including over the Internet.

It's also worth noting that at least one of the several "Columbine copy-cat" plots that were stopped on 4/20 all across the country last month was discovered via MySpace, and the FBI is using records of Livejournal.com postings against those accused in the Green Scare.
Loose lips sink ships!
