I'm planning on starting an organization in order to bring together the college aged leftists in my community and on my campus. The idea has been perculating in the recesses of my brain for the last year. Those thoughts have finally begun to solidify into plans and now those plans require action.

My community demographic:
*College town with a population of about 100,000
*The State Capital
*Home of Evergreen State College- one of the most leftist campuses in the U.S.
*Close proximity to the Fort Louis military base- so also many conservatives
*Strong activist roots within community
*The head of the economics department at the college is openly a Socialist

The percentages at the college are probably close to this:
-30% "wannabe hippies" and liberals
-25% Asian foreign exchange
-20% neutral
-20% educated leftist
-5% conservative

My strengths:
*Good organization skills
*Good at directing meetings
*Good at networking
*Lots of drive
*Well versed in leftist history and economics
*Good at utilizing people's strengths

So should I jump in head first by setting up an initial meeting and advertising it via flier and internet calendars (a month or so in advance)? I'm sure some of you have already been through the process- do you have any advice?

Many thanks!

Forgot to sign in :-)

Btw- there is currently no leftist organization on campus or off campus.

If I were you, I'd get some leftist mates and set up the organisation first. After sorting out the basics and conducting an initial meeting or two I'd then go out for your membership drive.

Perhaps get the head of the economics dept. to give you advice/assistance or whatnot... I know I've conversed several times with my socialist history teacher over a group i set up.
