Meet the Shock Troops of the Christian Youth

By Sunsara Taylor

If you've been waiting until the Christian fascist movement started filling stadiums with young people and hyping them up to do battle in "God's army" to get alarmed, wait no longer.

In recent weeks, Battle Cry, a Christian fundamentalist youth movement, has attracted more than 25,000 to mega-rally rock concerts in San Francisco and Detroit and this weekend they plan to fill Wachovia Stadium in Philadelphia.

They claim their religion and values are under attack but, amidst spectacular lightshows, hummers, Navy Seals, and military imagery on stage, it is Battle Cry that has declared war on everyone else! Their leader, Ron Luce, insists: "This is war. And Jesus invites us to get into the action, telling us that the violent--the 'forceful' ones--will lay hold of the kingdom."

A glimpse at Battle Cry's Honor Academy, which trains 500 youth each year and preaches that homosexuality and masturbation are sins, reveals a lot about what kind of society they are fighting for. Interns are forbidden to listen to secular music, watch R-rated movies or date. Men can't use the internet unsupervised and the length of women's skirts is regulated. The logic behind this, that men must be protected from the sin of sexual temptation, is what drives Islamic fundamentalists to shroud women in burkhas!

Behind their multi-million dollar operation that sends more than 5,000 missionaries to more than thirty-four countries each year, are some of the most powerful and extreme religious lunatics in the country. Their partners include Pat Robertson (who got a call from Karl Rove to discuss Alito before the nomination was made public), Ted Haggard (who brags that his concerns will be responded to by the White House within 24 hours), Jerry Falwell (who blamed September 11th on homosexuals, feminists, pagans, and abortionists), and others. Their events have been addressed by Barbara Bush (via video) as well as former President Gerry Ford. This weekend's event will include Franklyn Graham who has ministered to George Bush and publicly proclaimed that Islam is an "evil religion."

What most of these figures have in common is their insistence that the Bible be read literally and obeyed as the inerrant word of God. And, as Ron Luce leads youth to pray, "I will keep my eyes on the battle, submitting to Your code even when I don't understand.outside my comfort zone in the battle zone," it would be foolish to expect that there is any part of the Bible's literal horrors this movement would be unwilling to enforce. That includes stoning disobedient children and non-virgin brides (Deuteronomy 21:18-21 and 22:13-21), executing gays (Leviticus 20:13), and keeping slaves (Peter 2:18).

Already they staged a protest on the steps of San Francisco's City Hall precisely because they were "the very city hall steps where several months ago 'gay marriages' were celebrated." Their answer to the scourge of rape and violence against women is to end divorce, spread ignorance, insist on virginity--the very things that will more entrap women in these nightmares. And this Friday, they are planning rallies at fifty City Halls nation-wide.

Of course, like the President who gave Ron Luce an appointment to the White House Advisory Commission on Drug-Free Communities, Battle Cry tells its share of bald-faced lies. For one, they claim that "a society fortified by biblical principals and a strong moral code...is the heritage our forefathers fought and died to secure for us." But the word "God" never appears in the Constitution. After three-and-a-half months of debate about what should go into the document that would govern the land, the framers drafted a constitution that is secular.

Battle Cry also claims America has been "set aside for God's purposes--a country established for good and fruitfully blessed so that we might take God's message to the ends of the earth." It is revealing that for all their talk about the value of life and the evils of violent imagery, Battle Cry never speaks against the real violence and loss of life being inflicted by U.S. troops in Iraq.

Still, there is one thing that Battle Cry gets right: this country is in the midst of [deep shit]. We are indeed living through times when business-as-usual is [fucking unbearable].

As the [ruling class] wages [imperialist] wars and conducts torture in our names, as they leave New Orleans to rot, and drag us closer each day to a theocracy where abortion and birth control are banned, science is pulled under, and gays are persecuted, it is no wonder that young people are searching for [ways forward].

The truth is, however, youth will not find [ways forward] in a stadium listening to Ron Luce preach about religious war and intolerance. And they won't find it while buying Battle Cry's keepsake dog-tags.

These young people need to be challenged to look around them and think for themselves [and publicly confronted about their barbaric religion whenever they show their faces in public].

I am confident that if [we confront them, we can stop this shit in its tracks].

This generation--and their counterparts all around the world--will have to live with the consequences of this culture war, one way or another. [In any case, get ready for a battle of the streets with the new sturmabteilung of the Christian Fascist Movement, like the US has never seen. A radical, direct response to fascism is essential.]

I can't tell if I'm reading a "be all you can be" army advertisement or a terrible venture by youth pastors to make church "cool".

You have to love this article they have on depression though

http://www.battlecry.com/depression.php

Here are some common symptoms and what they could look like in teens:

Poor Concentration. Does a teen in your house have trouble focusing on schoolwork, or have their school grades dropped recently? Have you ever been talking with someone and noticed that they have a hard time paying attention to you, like something else is on their mind?

If you know anyone who regularly displays traits like these, it could indicate that they are dealing with depression.

In other words, if a teen is tired of hearing the same old bullshit that comes out of authority figures mouths, they must be clinically ill!

Some more highlights,

Do you know a teen that plays video games or watches TV late into the night? All-night television watching may be one sign that he or she suffers from depression.

Others signs of this include having a lot of difficulty getting up for school or taking many naps during the day

Wow, wow, thats all I have to say. I guess all old people are depressed and about to jump off bridges too eh?

Still not sure what you can do? Here is a simple list of dos and don’ts:

Do: Pray fervently with and for them and share meaningful scripture verses with them.
Don’t: Tell them “just to pray about it” or make them feel like healing would come if they would just trust God more.

Whats the fucking difference?

couldn't agree more. Although I don't really hate anime that much. The Religious Right are so hypoctic it makes me throw up. Look at the teachings of Jesus, they advocate peace, selflessness, and unity. The religious right are the base support of the War in Iraq and are conservative pigs that couldn't give a shit about the fact that about 21% of kids in this country grow up below the poverty line.

Some might oppose this, but I find these individuals to actually be Christians as actual followers of the faith.

www.godhatesrepublicans.com

They're religious, which can be good and bad, but they use spirituality to help society, and they actually practice what their faith preaches, which is fundamentally a relatively progressive religion, with the exception of the "Salvation through Church Membership" doctrine, and the lack of "Good deeds will save you" doctrine.

Love Christ, and that's all you need to do to be saved. So you don't have to care about society.
That's one of Christianity's flaws, but these particular folks I linked to seem to understand their religion, with its ups and downs.

Off Topic: I just can't stand Anime. The Japanese cartoons are so mundane, similarly themed, alike, and nauseatingly predictable in art style and thematic development that I have a horrible time watching most Anime shows, with the exception of maybe one.

And Hentai? That's one of the most sad, sad things society will ever generate.

So saying I despise the Religious Right more than Anime is truly saying something.

These Christian Fascists (the only term I take from Avakian) have got to fucking go!

BTW, Hentai can be hot, but 90% of it is just garbage.

They are young Christian dominionists. They are driving away more people from thier religion than attracting them. They say homosexuality is an abomination. But the War in Iraq and 3rd world exploitation are not? How about all the support for the "Green Gospel".? In other words, God will make me rich on this Earth.
How about the utter lack of compassion for the poor and oppressed?

Regardless, of rather you think religion is crap or not. You can see that they can't even follow thier own holy book.

Real people on the streets can see this is crap. What truly qualifies as an abomination? The religious right are the new Pharisees.

No, the only kind of "communism" that these godsuckers would be able to implement would be that of an 11th century monastery.

They are attacking capitalism from the opposite direction.

They want to go back to feudalism.

This is one way I think capitalism could still do a lot of good--have its hedonism, illusory individualism (but perhaps the illusion of individuality is a prerequisite for striving for real individualism), its "assault on morality" and its materialism absolutely rip apart the remaining shreds of religion in the west and usher in an era of atheist, hedonist, materialist capitalism.

It would be a huge improvement. And I even lean towards the argument that this development is a prerequisite for communist revolution.
