What I learned from my shitty pro-US/capitalist AP Economics course is that protectionism is bad. Basically it is when you try to boost your domestic industry by putting up barriers to block imports such as tariffs, etc.
I would like another point of view as I am sick of this class (Thankfully I took the AP test today and finally am done with it forever.) So, could someone explain Protectionism to me? Thanks.

Kicking Away the Ladder: How the Economic and Intellectual Histories of Capitalism Have Been Re-Written to Justify Neo-Liberal Capitalism by Ha-Joon Chang. (http://www.paecon.net/PAEtexts/Chang1.htm)
I can't take credit for this article, it was posted by the user JKP in this thread (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=49847)....you may find both the article and thread, which are brief don't worry, of interest to you.
Virtually every developed economy did so with a degree of "Protectionism"....which essentially means, they stopped other countries looting. So whilst the American Economic establishment promotes "anti-Protectionism", they're case is not backed up by the cold hard evidence.
Oh, you might also find this interesting: Jeffrey Sachs -- Imperialist Shill August 26, 2005 by RedStar2000 (http://www.redstar2000papers.com/theory.php?subaction=showfull&id=1125111058&archive=&cnshow=headlines&start_from=&ucat=&).
It's based on a debate from the Opposing Ideologies forum, and in all fairness, redstar does a pretty good demolition job of a pro-Economic Imperialism dipshit.
Hope all this helps. :)

My point of view.........
Free trade is when govt. and people trade(bussiness owners or capitalist)
ex: Free trade is usually in a capitalist nation. (USA)
Protectionism is when people arent allowed to trade with other nations.
ex: Protectionism is usually in socialist and communist countries. (Cuba)
