Why do you think Chile managed to become so succesful?

Has it?

In what ways?

To my knowledge, it's just another emerging capitalist country..."riding high" at the moment on unusually high copper prices in the world market.

With a "Socialist" government.

You gotta love those fake lefties all over Latin America.

Chile is one of the few countries that totally prohibits abortion - even when the woman has been raped or if her life is in danger.

How is this "socialist"?

Well, my post was dripping with sarcasm..

Even if it's "fake left" at least it's better than the right-wing military dictatorships of the past decades, and Bachelet is far better than Pinochet. Plus Chile is a very conservative country, divorce was only allowed a few years ago, the transition to at least moderate leftism takes time and I have faith that Miss Bachelet will do something about it.

It would have become another Cuba if Allende wasn't taken out. He was starting to make progress and had alligned himself with Castro.
It would be Castro, Allende, Chavez and Morales and latin america would have been even stronger by today if the americans hadn't funded Pinochet.

divorce was only allowed a few years ago,

So was the case in Ireland. They allowed divorce in 1994.

You would like Allende as dictator of Chile, no?

This blind faith in leaders and the want of expanding their term for life is just so pathetic.

What you on about? Allende was one of the first proper socialist people to ever be elected in Latin America. And yeah, I would very much prefer that he was still alive, especially since my dad's family was subject to Pinochet's purges.

I'm so sorry.

I thought you meant to cement Allende into the position as head of the country, just like Castro, which (I believe) only hurts the left. My bad.

I think when drain.you said "Chile would have been another Cuba" he meant it in a positive manner, i.e it is preferable to the exploitation of a Capitalist society

Allende was elected democratically and wasn't as radical as Castro

Though he was still demonised as an evil Soviet puppet of course

I like the direction Chile is going in at the moment, although I don't think Bchelet is as promising as Chavez or Morales
