Are they simply heritage-oriented separatists? Or are they socialist/fascist/whatever?

A little of both.
There may be some socialist values in their beliefs, but it's mainly culture-based because Quebecers are very different in culture and psychology than the rest of Canadians.
Very few seperatists left nowadays mind you.

I am a quebecer, and i would say separatists are mostly socialists. FLQ (Quebec's Liberation Front), was a communist terrorist group, who was posing bombs in the 60s. PQ (Quebecers Party), is a social-democrat separatist party, still trying to separate quebec from canada.
It prooves most separatists are leftists

El Barbudo, i totally have to disagree with you there. the FLQ yeah ok socialist,,....but the FLQ is way gone. and now i truly agree that most of the people, including every single seperatist i know, is so because of culture. they feel like they don't get enough recognition of their culture, language and their cultural values/institutions.
quite frankly i agree that in many regards, yes their culture has been supressed but obviously the way of negotiating is getting them somewhere. they want to separate, but use canadian currency, and rely on the canadian govern't for funding etc.,
anyway their situation could be worse....they could be like the ABoriginal people's of Canada..... i recently sat in at the Supreme Court of Canada during the hearing of the Powley case (about Metis rights).....horrifyingly, there were some provincial governments....BC and Manitoba who were trying to say that the Metis are nothing but First Nations peoples with a little less First Nations blood. basically they denied that the metis even have their own distinctive culture.
i mention this not to suggest that separatists should quit whinning or any thing like that. after all i believe they do have some valid concerns. i just don't think separating is the right answer.

The separtists movement is definatley socialist. The PQ brought us anti-scab laws, the highest minimum wage in the country, the most advanced education system in the country, really cheap nationalised daycare, etc. The FLQ, even though they are gone now, were communists. They wanted to kick out the english capitalist exploiters. Note that almost all the french were working class at the time, all the capitalists were english. Here are some quotes from the FLQ manifesto:
"The Front de Liberation du Quebec wants total independence for QUebececkers; iut wants to see them united in a free society, the big bosses who dish out patronage and their henchmen, who have turned Quebec into a private preserve of cheap labour and unscupulous exploitation."
"...thre FLQ will never let itself be distracted by the electoral crumbs that the Anglo-Saxon cvapitalists toss into the Quebec barnyard every four years... In the coming year Bourassa (the capitalist permier who won a large majority with only about 40% of the vote) is goint to get what's coming to him: 100 000 revolutionary workers, armed and organized!"
"Make your revolution yousleves in you neighbourhoods, in your placesn of work... Only you are capable of building a free society."

k i don't disagree that the FLQ was socialist but the FLQ is gone, and I disagree that the tradition of the FLQ has carried on. ....please Nic8...look beyond the FLQ cause it doesn't exist anymore
