View Full Version : USA's little friend Canada says PFO

Just an interesting little story that i think reflects a lot of the sentiment in the USA, although I know it is not something that is held by the majority of Americans (but then again I think its how Bush feels)
A Family of Canadians from British COlumbia went down to the USA about a week after the war started. The family went to a Washington town where it was common for Canadians to shop and stay at for weekends etc. When the woman and her kids returned to their mini-van, there was a note on her dashboard. I don't remember the exact words but the note in essence said "YOu don't support this war, you're traitors. you're not wanted in the USA anymore, go back to where you belong". The eight year daughter told her mommy was scared and wanted to go home, and that's exactly what they did.
It just scary what happens when Canada Finally stands up and says no to the USA. Perhaps American needs to be educated that we aren't just another state....we are an independent nation that is capable of holding its own values and won't compromise those values even for the USA.
I'd just like with a note that I am very proud that our Prime Minister Jean Chretian stood up and refused to take part in the war (In fact its one of the only things i've ever been proud about re: him despite his decade (or close thereto) in power). And I also appreciate all Americans who support Canada's decision to stay out of this illegal and immoral war.

The ironic thing is that Canadian imperialism has actually sent troops to participate in the assault on Iraq. You have to look at their words, not their deeds.

Is the Canadian media fueling conflict?

Canada is a big country with a wide-ranging spectrum of people and opinions. Most English Canadians I know in Toronto and Vancouver are more American than baseball and apple pie.
March 15, 2003:
350,000 antiwar protesters in Montreal.
20,000 PROwar protesters in Toronto.
How the HELL can you be PROwar anyhow? "You like 'em babies crisp or grilled, sir?"

I accidently closed my last post on this, so this will be short an less detailed.
1. The 'pro war' demonstrations are made up of annexionists and headed by Americans.
2. The Canadian forces are their on there own will. The forces in Afghanistan where sent as an excuse to keep our troops out of Iraq. The military planners, Chretien does not have complete control over policy (seeing as Paul Martin is proAMerican, and probaly Pro War)
3. That Zmag source says that our media is more neutral than BBC or CNN, but the CBC is a corportaion hell hole and is playing for profit (which disgusts me...but the government does not take care of it well enough)
4. Chretien wants a legacy, what is he getting from this? A legacy of wanting a legacy.
5. The last time this happened was under a man named Pierre (french for Pete!) Eliot Trudeau

OK i THOROUGHLY object to the idea that most Canadians are more canadian than baseball and apple pie.....first of all we up here like hockey more than baseball (ok not me i personally hate sports but i just had to play on stereotypes there).
but seriously, yes canadians and americans are a lot alike in many regards, but i think that happens naturally when you have two states sharing a LARGE border who speak the same language. but canadians and americans are also extremely different. canadians tend to have more socialist views than americans and don't believe any of that melting pot shit that the americans try to preach. and quite frankly if you are only getting your information from Vancouver and Toronto you are missing out on a whole world of peoples......canadians are extremely diverse but one thing they are not is like americans.
second of all the 'pro-war' protests in Toronto weren't actually pro-war protests in the sense that all the people there supported and encouraged the war, although the media did do an excellent job of making them appear that way. the protests were actually in support of the soldiers in the war already....showing support and a desire for them to be brought home safely (especially since for some stupid reason quite a few canadians end up enlisting in the us army).
its a minor difference true but it really does make a difference.
and crazypete...i love that you pointed out that pirre est francais pour pete....lol cute

Pierre is peter. I know ;)
Hockey nationalism is the sickest thing ever created.
The difference between Toronto and Wawa is shattering, and they are both in the same province. World view, cultural make up, everything.

There was a pro-war rally here in Belfast last week. The marchers, carring US and UK flags, attacked two Catholic bars and a taxi stand.

CrazyPete thanx for agreeing with me. and its true Toronto and Wawa (Wawa? why did you pick Wawa?) are very different as is the rest of canada.
in fact i've travelled to Quebec ( i live across the bridge from Quebec), Saskatchewan and Alberta and they are very different. and ask me after this summer once i've been to every province and 2 of the 3 territories if canadians are like americans

I have been to Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Fairly isolated, but I only go when I get to go for free, so I'm not complaining.
I picked Wawa because that is the furthest north Ontario community I have stayed in. They have a good wings night ;)

I don't fully understand what you're saying here.
But I don't see how troops can be "there on their own." Troops are sent where the Canadian government and ruling class decide to send them. The Canadian government, like any other, must be held responsible for its actions.
