im making a full lenght movie about the vietnam war - from the view of 6 american soldiers.
throw any ideas you have for plot twists/ideas for the movie at all down and i may use them ;)
the only guidline is that the men are conscripted at the same time and it is set in the 2 or third year of the movie - but im open to changing this...
cheers

From the big book of Vietnam clichés
*One soldier must be black
*If not black, he must be Native American
*One soldier will have just married
*This soldier dies horrifically, crying "tell my wife I loved her"
*Napalm must look like fireworks
*On soldier must critiscize the war before being told to "keep politics outta this"
*There must be at least one scene of a convoy of choppers
*There must be an affable, "gentle-giant" type
*This charcter must either go insane and shoot himself
*Or get blown up by a landmine
*Their sargeant must be a good-old Texas American, ready to kick some gook ass
*But he must also have an inner, sensitive side that he hides from his troops
*References to 60's music is a must
*And Jane Fonda
*If there are two best friends in the platoon, only one survives the war

Not sure if this was 60's or not, but I can suggest Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. You know the song from Rocky :P

im already using knoking on heavens door (bob dylan) in the sad scene at the end
I recommend having Iggy Pop - I wanna be your dog playing as some soldiers are cruising in a helo.
Hm... A movie about the Vietnam/USA war from the viewpoint of american soldiers.
Sounds... creative. :P

I say dont even start shooting before you've got all the screen play and story board worked out.
They didn't have a script for Apocalypse Now when they started shooting and look how that turned out!

I'd rather it be done from the viewpoint of zombies.

Not everyone is graced with the skill of Francis Ford Coppola.

i think they should be pinned down, and he takes a carbine, and runs out, kills a few viet cong, and eventually gets shot, but this action saves the lives of all the others. in the end he would be awarded a silver star at his open casket burial, at which all five other soldiers, and the general who pushed him around in the beginning, are present
and the viet cong did not use land mines, they used an improvised tripwire trail bomb. they would put a grenade in an empty c-ration can from a US soldier, and then they would pull the pin and tie a rope around the grenade and stretvht the rope out across the trails. when the GIs would trip the wire, the grenade would pull out of the can, and it would go off, kind of like a less concentrated claymore.

i realy like this idea appart from the fact that it is set toward the middle/end of the war and so they have m-16s not m-1 carbines but thanks for the idea
p.s (josh) iggy pop i wanna be your dog is a sick song - also in the movie

Lucky you told me, who know what social faux pas could have arisen from my lack of knowledge on Viet Cong ballistic techniques

You say that the Soldiers were coscripted right? Well make them real people. It's easy to fall into the trap of making these soldiers gun ho people. Don't. Real people who may or may not want to be there. Some think this is their duty, some just want to go home. Forsake the traditional bravado. You want real people.

Maybe you can make the movie a tragedy and end up with dead soldiers and tears, and end the movie with a sad folk song to transition from silenced cries from the soldiers to the credits.

im thinking of playing "knockin' on heavens door" by bob dylan or guns n' roses at the end at the scene were all the troops are standing round a fallen comrads coffin

as soon has he drops all the other troops run. Silver Star and flowers on top of his casket at the end, with him listed KIA, then one of the guys is talking to famliy and then cut to flash back, and after the troops leave the vietcong capture him <insert generic montage-ed prison torture sequence
