A demonstration by thousands of Mexican workers Friday to promote union solidarity is turning into a protest against America's influence on the nation's economy. The protestors will take part in a boycott of all things "gringo" next week. It is set to coincide with the protests going on next week in the US.

Yeah, therez been rising tensions in alot of regions of Mexico, especially involving miners after the government refused to acknowledge and has initiated a smearing campaign against the union president, which the miners still regard as their leader

But the boycott will display a great deal of solidarity and tenacity with all immigrants in the US, I hope many in Mexico and around the world will take part in it
We'll surely send a message to all those rich fat cats that despise the masses of immigrants who do their dirty work
Am I the only one that is perplexed by the fact that in the US, May 1st is virtually ignored by the entire population and the government?
Gotta love the cappies

Didn't the US have something on the 1st of May? Like "work day" or something? Freedom day, no?

The US does not consider May Day a "holiday", we have labor day. May day was the turning point in the fight for the 8 hour workday and the date of the Haymarket riot in 1886.

Actually May 1st IS a holiday in many parts of the United States. It's called 'Loyalty Day' and its basically a 4th-of-July type deal where you celebrate America and declare your allegiance to the US and not to Communism.

I have a problem with a protest that will occur in the U.S. on May 1st. There will be a protest because of that whole immigration debate going on. I like the idea of a protest, but the problemf for me is that it will take place on May Day. The news will not cover May Day, instead it will cover the protest. May Day is the day where we make our point. I don't know yet because it hasn't happened, but I hope something good comes out of it.

THE PROTEST IS MAY DAY! The immigrants ARE WORKERS, it is their day! This is exactly what the point of May Day is, taking a stand for the working class.

I got no problem with that. I support the workers and yes, immigrants are workers. I just think that it will not be portrayed like that. Instead of being about the workers, it will turn into a race thing. I don't think that May Day should be celebrated in a nationalist way. May Day is international and it should stay like that. I am pro-worker, but I am against nationalism. I am not calling them nationalist, but it will be seen as that by the corrupt media.

You act as if the media actually gives notice to May Day  I don't know any non-leftists my age who would even know what May Day is, or when it is :(

How is it being celebrated in a nationalist way? How is trying to end the term "illegal" being attached to a human being nationalist? It's the very opposite.
I am not calling them nationalist, but it will be seen as that by the corrupt media.
Don't base your decisions on anything by how the media presents it. They can and do twist and contort anything! Fuck them.

Actually, the Haymarket Riot occured on May 4th and was a response to police brutality against striking workers which occured on May 3rd.

That's innacurate. It's called Flag Day. And yeah, we have Labor Day the first Monday in September.

Orginally, Labor Day was supposed to be on May 1 but politicians decided that it would benefit the socialist and communist movement so they moved it to September.

I understand that and maybe I should have worded my post differently. The reason the workers were at Haymarket was because of the strikes that started May 1 for the 8 hour workday. I don't need a history lesson thank you.

We have no control over how it'll be "portrayed", but I can promise you that no matter what it'll be portrayed badly.
That's what happens in capitalism. when the bourgeoisie controls the media they control the press and that means that any workers movement will get shit coverage.
its our job to get organized and get active. Let the fucking liberals worry about "portrayal".

In the US Flag Day is on June 14th, and Loyalty Day is May 1st.
