The Guardian

Had Neil Young released a song titled Let's Impeach the President three years ago, he would have been exiled to the fringes of American music: just ask the Dixie Chicks.

But he is releasing it today - and there could be few better indicators of how much has changed than the question Young was asked on TV recently. Wasn't he just cynically cashing in, the CNN interviewer wanted to know, on the fact that so many people hate George Bush?

I don't think he's cashing in, I really don't think he needs either the cash or the noteriety.

The Dixie Chicks were bubble gum country and when they spoke out they alienated some of their base. I really don't think Neil Young's base is that solidly in the Bush camp. I know at one point he was somewhat supportive of Bush after 9/11 but he also had a brain tumor around that time and no doubt that affected his judgement.

Well Young has been flying his anti-establishment colours since Greendale, an album that ended on a rather environmentalist note. There's not anything anti-capitalist or communist about him of course but its an interesting shift. You could probably trace this slight anti-establishment streak back to Freedom where there was a few political asides amongst the lyrics, not least Rockin' in the Free World or Crime in the City. In fact my first quote/sig on RevLeft was from On Broadway:

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway,
They say there's always magic in the air,
But when you’re walkin' down the street, and you ain't had enough to eat,
The glitter rubs right off, and you're nowhere

Ironically he was a Reagan supporter in the 80s.

"Piece Of Crap" - Neil Young

Tried to save the trees
Bought a platsic bag
The bottom fell out
It was a piece of crap

Saw it on the tube
Bought it on the phone
Now you're home alone
It's a piece of crap

I tried to plug in it
I tried to turn it on
When I got it home
It was a piece of crap

Got it from a friend
On him you can depend
I found out in the end
It was a piece of crap

I'm trying to save the trees
I saw it on TV
They cut the forest down
To build a piece of crap

I went back to the store
They gave me four more
The guy told me at the door
It's a piece of crap
