Does anyone else like Anne Rice?

Some of you may not of heard of her, but have heard of the movie Interview with the Vampire. She wrote the novel of the same name that movie was based on.

The movie is probably the best vampire ones out there next to Bram Stoker's Dracula, and I would argue the same about the same novels.

I know

1.) It's not politically concious at all

2.) It's anti-materialist

3.) It's somewhat bourgeois

That said, she is an excellent writer, who describes vivide details, she is very good at adding eroticism and conveying emotions. I'm not really into that sort of genre unless it's classic stuff (like Frankenstein or Dracula) so her stuff is the odd thing on my bookshelf.

I am curious though, if anyone has any thoughts on her/her books, political or otherwise....

I've read and watched Interview with the Vampire.

I think that both the movie and the book are pretty good.

I'm really into Anne Rice too; well, Rice before she became a Jesus-freak and started "writing for God." Ugh.

There are religious themes in the Vamp Chrons too, but they're obscure enough to not bug me, and they're compensated for by her queer erotica!

She tended to be really uncritical of society though. I remember reading either Armand of QotD when I was 14 or 15. There's a chapter where she's detailing how wonderful life is in... Miami I think it was; she basically said that everyone was doing great and had enough and such- and I remember reading that and going... "hang on a minute... that is SO not true." :P

I'm taking a course in Gothic Fiction next semester and we're looking at Interview- along with Northanger Abbey, Frankenstein and Buffy! Shold be good fun.

Hey, sounds like a kewl course. We have a genre up here called "Southern Ontario Gothic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ontario_Gothic)", mostly ghost stories by writers like Robertson Davies...

Yeah, she does make life in the setting seems good, but I think this is because she wants to make it seem like the vampires are really miserable by making it seem like normal life is better..

I do find her descriptions of places to be very good, but being someone who hasn't traveled a lot I can't always tell how accurate they are.

Read all of the Chronicals and love them, though the earler ones are by far the best (with the exception of Blackwood Farm which is astoundinglly good.)
Anyone read her Mayfair Witch books? They're equally as good, if not occasionally better, than the Vampire Chronicals...

I've got a really nice copy of the first three vampire chronicles in paper back that caught my eye. I started to read Interview and got about 100 pages into it before I got distracted by other books.

I think she's one of those authors who "peak early". I enjoyed The Vampire Lestat quite a bit...it had a "70s flavor". The subsequent chronicles I found to be wordy and unimaginative.

And now she's "writing for God"?

The movie was okay and the books were pretty good. I remember there was a lot of controversy 'cause one of the vampires feed on Jesus Christ in one of her novels.
