Well I introduced myself before but here a quick one. Im 21 yrs old and live in Southern California of the United States. Im a full time university student studying biology as pre-med to enter medical school. I also work at a shopping mall where I always hate seeing CONSUMERISM and THE RICH showing off their money and getting drunk. Back tp pre-med, I dont know if I even have a chance if entering medical school because Mr.Rich has spoiled his son and gave him everything he needed and had him not work at all. It is not fair that I may score lower than the rich boy since I had a lot to worry about. On ther other hand I work, go to school and take care of my family. Well, I dislike seeing all the inequality here in America. I read in an article that the amount of rich people has increased more than ever. Gas prices are increasing. That hurts the middle and poor class more than it hurts the rich. Comnsumerism is my hatred. Seeing all the effort and money that goes into selling products one does not need. RIch getting richer, Poor trying to buy these items too. What is brainwashing the poor? Why do us American HAVE TO HAVE 24 inch rims, jacuzzi, drink alcohol all week. I see it around me all the time.
I see on TV how Latin America is changing and for a good cause. My familyroots are with Peru since thats where my family is from. Ever since I was young I've had the feeling of becoming somthing important but I have not figured it out yet. Maybe by visiting my real home country, I may find something. I should go tour Latin America just as Che Guevara did and see THE REAL WORLD.
I know there are more people like me that do not like the US governemnt policies and the kind of people that mostly live here. Im ojne of the few who express this. If I expressed this, I become an outcast outhere in America.
So I ask this, do u think my destiny lies in Latin America? Should I go and discover something? Being 21, I believe that is an excellent choice. Id like to hear form some of you and what you think your destiny is and what u plan to do with you own lives. Im in the opposing ideologies section because I am American but think LEFT.

As someone with Latin American roots, you might well qualify for a full scholarship at the University of Havana...especially if you tell them you're going back to Peru after you graduate.

By all accounts, UH is a "state-of-the-art" school...so you'll gain a superior medical education. You must be fluent in Spanish, of course.

In my opinion, all the "signs" point to things getting worse in the U.S. and faster than in the other "old" capitalist countries...that is, you'd have a better chance in any "western country" than you do in the U.S.

See the thread "Going off to college" in this forum.

Good luck!

I dont think that being American and Left are opposing terms. You can be an American Leftist the same way some one can be a Cuban Right-winger. As someone who has come to live in North America in pursuit of academic credientials I would argue that get your degrees in North America and then take your expertise to whereever you want to live. I think that travelling through Latin America would be good, but you also need to get the romanticism out of your head. I personally think one should try to build revolution where one lives. The movements in Latin America cannot be sustained if the American government squashes them with death squads and puppet dictators. So, you may do more good in North America trying to create the conditions for the movements in latin America to thrive.

Go. And enjoy yourself. :)

You'll regret it if you don't.

What is valuable education within "the system" and what is really a valuable education often differ. I may be a slight hypocrite having gone back to education after a bit of a failed work/travel year, but I would still say that travel is superior most formal education, even if it doesn't get you the job.

In answer to your post; yes the system is biased, yes it is unfair, yes you should go and travel. If you do go, make sure you stay smart, savour the experience and learn well :)
