Hi there,
Firstly,I've meant to join this palce for a long time.Too long. I always found it a handy place for information, but never had the time to join up.So now I'm going to change that.

My names Donal,I'm a young lad of 16 years, from Dublin in Ireland.

To get down to politics..I was raised in a traditional Republican household, you know Sinn Fein supporting,Proclamation pride of place and all that..from Irish Republicanism, I developed an interest in Socialism. Men like James Connolly, Peadar O' Donnell,Liam Mellows and so on at home, and the obvious international figures. To say men alone is I suppose unfair, there have been many women who've influenced my way of thinking too.

I suppose I'm a Socialist-Republican, I'm unaffiliated, and to be honest, happy enough that way, for now anyway. I'm a MEist, you could say.I have a lot of time for a lot of parties but, any group working towards the ultimate goal, is worthy of credit. Unity is probably the most needed thing on the left here at present.

I'm very interested in the struggles of the Basque Lands and Palestine for freedom too. I suppose I just built on what was installed in me from a young age, I still consider myself an Irish Republicanism, but more of an internationalist? The Connolly Column from the Spanish Civil War are probably the people I admire most from our history.

Eh,other than politics...music is a HUGE part of life to me,the soundtrack to it. I listen to alot of punk rock, although lately I'm expanding a little. To name five artists: The Clash,Woody Guthrie, Jawbreaker, Sage Francis and Christy Moore. A lot of kids in my class are talking about cars, but I'd like to remain the cycling kid for as long as possible! I've a lot of time for Animal Rights, but thats another days issue eh?

Anyway, cheers for reading, this is probably a bit long!
Take care,
Donal

Welcome. I'm, at least in part, an Irish-American — my great-grandmother imigrated from Ireland and married into an older Irish-American / Native-American family — my maternal side of the family is British. "Be moderate" is one of my favourite quotes but I consider the Connollyist paradigm a bit antiqued but still brilliant. It is said that Lenin was inspired by Connolly.

thank you both for the welcome!

Yes,I've heard that about Lenin myself too. There is a very, very good book called the Reds and The Green ("Ireland, Russia and the Communist Internationals") and there was always some degree of interest in Irelands struggle from the Soviet Union, contact with the IRA of the time and Lenin meeting Roddy Connolly etc.

Lenins comments on the Easter Rising were very sympathetic to the Irish , and almost angered at the reactions of others.

That book-information (http://www.irishdemocrat.co.uk/reviews/ireland-russia/)

Irish America has always been a good friend, there's some concern here over the situation in America at present with regards to immigrants but.I really don't know enough on all that to comment. I don't think it would do Irish-America relations any good but, there's already alot of pressure on the Government to do something about the U.S Army/Shannon Airport situation...

Thanks again

Hey!Thanks for the welcome

Ah come on,Christy's a legend!

I only really like his more political tunes to be hoenst.
Companeros
Back Home In Derry
Sacco and Vanzetti
James Connolly
Viva la Quinta Brigada
Victor Jara
Hey Ronnie Reagan

and the likes..notice hwo Christy didn't write many of his best tunes!

Live he's something else, at his best in a small venue.
Each to their own I suppose, although Christy's music is going downhill a bit as of late.

Yeah same here, the Basque conflict bears a startling resemblance to the North of Ireland

The Connolly Column from the Spanish Civil War are probably the people I admire most from our history.
Ditto, and the blueshirts are probably the people I hate the most

The Clash,Woody Guthrie, Jawbreaker, Sage Francis and Christy Moore
