What's a reactionary?

I keep reading this in the papers but I don't know what it means. I am pretty sure it is derogatory but I don't know why.

Reactionary is either wanting human civilization to stop advancing or to go backwards.

We, on the other hand, want it to progress.

In the sense that it is used here (mostly Marxist) it basically means an individual who reacts against a revolutionary movement. It also encompasses those that hold reactionary ideas; those not compatible with the society that the revolution seeks to establish.

A soldier fighting a revolution would be a rectionary, a homophobe would hold reactionary ideas. You get the basic idea, it has become an almost generic term for those against post-revolutionary society, or the attempt at it.

What will we do with the people who are incompatible with our new society?

Well the Marxist approach is that there should be a transitory state of socialism, whereby some of the infastructure of capitalism will be maintained, but instead run by the workers themelves. I suppose that a proletarianised court system might be used in the mean time, but there are lots of different ideas about this. (Check the theory forum)

It is important that the prevailing ideas are continously cantaining less and less reactionary elements before a revolution is undertaken, otherwise there could be many problems in the aftermath.

You have got the jist of what a reactionary is, how to deal with them however is a very diverse area of study, and I don't claim to have a definitive answer. Again check theory out, these threads have been fairly popular, there are several in this forum also if memory serves.
