View Full Version : May Day in a Small Town

This year my few local comrades and I are planning on doing some sort of protest/demontration to commemorate the holiday. The question is, what, exactly? There is almost no minority population here, unfortuanatly, and it is Conservative Central, essentially. So, we're in an interesting spot; we can't really stage a protest of the immigration bill, since no one here would care, and any attempts at anything else would be frowned upon. Not that I mind being frowned upon, I am openly a socialist, but it could make gaining any support difficult.
So, I was just wondering if anyone here and some suggestions. Any positive input is welcome, thanks!

I'd see no problem with doing what you've just rejectd. Start a petition or hand out leaflets and have some plackards. You might just get someone onside. Any actions better than none.

Are there any unions in your town? If so, you could pass out leaflets outside of the unionized workplace during shift change explaining the meaning of May Day, along with free hot dogs or pop or some other kind of little snack. That will lay the basis for something more political, and more rooted among working people, next year.

No local unions, sadly, so that is not really an option =\

I myself happen to be confined to a small suburban city (the population is only something like 34,000, I think.). I have not had time to look around. I will meet with a more experienced comrade sometime in the near future and see what he thinks. To my knowledge, there were no immigration protests here. Being caught up with work also does not help out with things, either. I missed out on some scattered anti-war protests a few weeks ago due to being ill informed. :(

It's even worse here, being I am in a town of around 6,000 >.<

I'm pretty much with you, DarkTravesty, only a few thousand bigger. My friends and I (still in high school for a month, sadly) are organizing a massive walkout from the school for immigrant rights. We're going an hour away to a metropolitan center to join the demonstrations. Maybe that would work? Although it may be a little late to mobilize something big, you might mobilize something.

Do you live in America or another country. May day worker's celebrations aren't too popular in America.

Yeah that's the thing, May day is always completely ignored. I think we should have met up with the anti-fas groups in minnesota the other day and tried sart something big.

Labour day is in september in the US of America. Being a pagan, I will celebrate the 30th of April.

Comrade, have you seen the flyer on indymedia calling for a general strike of truck drivers and dock workers?
You could maybe pass out copies of it in a busy area. If you have a wal mart locally, that would be in particular very pertinent. You could also make a banner on red that reads 'workers of the world unite'.
Best of luck comrade.

I'd suggest red flags, but they are also for the republican party in the US so the wrong message might be given out. It might be good to just post around some posters with Mayday information on them? Maybe just informing people that there exists such a thing as international workers day.
That or burn down your local McDonalds.
