At my highschool, there is a large hispanic population( more than white people actually), mostly mexican me being one of them. The past week or so there has been much talk about joining in the May Day walk-outs.at a pep-rally last week for our soccer team, a group of kids took a huge mexican flag to school, proudly displaying on the campus and in the stands, even better, the teachers made no attempt, to take it. But they did make an announcment stating all walk-outs will be considered truent, and will possibly be suspended. They are encouraging parents to ensure that their kids attend school, on may day. They have also made it clear, that any violence in school relating to the protest will not be tolerated.

As of now nobody is really organized, many people who want to walk out do not even know what they are protesting, others just want an exucse to skip school. For the ones that do wish to protet, they consist of small groups of friends, and the students are not united, so what should be done, as disorganized as we are, I fear a walk-out will end terribly, and draw criticism from the town, like the dallas student walk-outs did. I think it would be better to have a peaceful protest at school, and have gotten about 16 people to join me. But with hundreds of hispanics planning do to there own thing on may 1st, I think there will be mixed results, people walking out, others protesting, what cas be done to unite the students before may 1st?and what is better to walk-out or stay at school and hold a protest. I think getting our school soccer team to all do one of the two, would get a lot people to join in because of the enourmous pride many people here, especially hispanics have in our soccer team.

More time off of school :D If you have a large majority of the school walking out this shouldn't matter.

Make flyers

Good for them. If they walk out with you guys it will show contempt for the school system in general!

Ideally, a general meeting of some sort. But realisticly try and talk to the large "clicks" or groups of people to get the general feelings. If those doing the in school protest would like to walk out but are afraid of small numbers than go ahead and declare a walk out.

You don't have to have 90% of the school on board. Just a decent sized group to initiate the walk out, and being a student myself, most other students should jump at the oppertunity to join in. Just distribute info and make a big fuss about it to let people know whats going on.

An in school protest is fine (occupying the school would be better, it might make the news ;) ) but a walk out would get more attention, especially if you didn't go back at all that day. If you do walk out, try and get in touch with larger demonstrations that day and get the students to join in on them.

Hit the local media up if you get anything organized. That's what we're trying to do here. It's really just me (anglo) and my Mexican friend right now, but we're trying to get together a big walkout in my 99% white town.

The key is organization, for sure. We're contacting groups and trying to find an effective way to get a lot of students together. I've got a friend who just got elected to school board, so hopefully we'll be able to not get all truancies, which will help convince the kids who are not so political to leave.

Some advice,or words of warning..

Something along these lines was planned at my own school,Over this (http://indymedia.ie/article/73352) and well, to say the amount of people who intend to do something is always higher than the amount that DO,would be a huge understatement. A SMALL amount of us did go,and head to the march, and had parents more than willing to stand by that decision. The school freaked at anyone who didn't have that backing(funny that, they'll nly pick on kids when they feel the parents won't mind!) but again, you'll get a lot of "LETS CHANGE THE WORLD!!" attitude that will quickly change to "bollocks,I'm going bakc to class" when the big bad principal nears.

It is worth a shot. You WILL find people to carry it through. Nates advice, the last bit in particular,is great.Go for it ;)
