Angry mobs of Hasidim taunted cops and set fires in the streets of Brooklyn last night after police busted an elderly member of their community in a traffic stop.
The wild protests flared shortly after 6:30 p.m., when police pulled over 75-year-old Arthur Schick for allegedly talking on his cell phone while driving in Borough Park.

They're a sect of Jews, I believe they're very orthodox.

And considering their reaction to one of their members being stopped for talking on a mobile while driving, I hardly think it's a much victimised community.

I suppose you'd call them "whiners" too?

The Hasidim are a very big Jewish faction.
Like there are Catholic Christians, there are Hasidic Jews.

There are very different factions among the Hasidim. Every rabbi dictates a different policy.

Many extremely religious jews (not necessarily Hasidim) believes that they must protect their jewish brothers from the non-jewish authorities under any circumstances.

While I'm writing this message I read on the web that in Jerusalem religious jews are rioting because one of their community members was arrested by the police for killing his baby son (they believe that secular jewish authorities are the same as non-jewish). They believe that if someone in their community comitted a crime they should punish him themselves or forgive him, and they don't want anybody from outside to get involved.

But again, there are many others (and less bizzar) kinds of Hasidim.

If the charges laid against the individual in question are false, setting fire to Brooklyn is an overreaction to say the least.

If it is true, then they should be punished accordingly. Driving while using a mobile is putting others at unnecessary risk.

I don't think you know too much about the Hasidic community of Crown Heights. They aren't too victimized, but there has been considerable anti-semitism directed towards them. An example would be the Crown Heights riots of '91.

The riots were further inflamed when the police chief started yelling anti-semitic profanities at them. There has been much police animosity towards them as well. A few of my friends have been accosted by the pigs, and no doubt the riot is from bottled up rage.

It isn't an overreaction when you consider what has been done to them.
