It's obvious that they're anti-war, socially liberal, and secularist, but is there anymore to it than that?

They are rather patriotic to 'England', personally I find that rather distasteful, however I love Iron Maiden so I can forgive them.

Bruce Dickinson was a member of the UK Conservative party (I don't know if he still is)
That should say it all. He is a tory, don't know about the rest of the band.

Bruce was in the Tory students' group when he was in university, wasn't he? Not sure if he's affiliated now, although I was sorely disappointed with the song "The Age of Innocence" about how the state should supposedly crack down on crime harder.

But their music is awesome.

They opposed the Gulf War...And I don't think hardcore English patriots would write a song that could easily become the SNP's party anthem.

They certainly don't skimp on the British iconography. They seem quite nationalistic.

The first time I heard Run to the Hills I thought wow not bad for a metal band of that era but that doesn't necessarily make them progressive or left.

Picture a US metal band that was always waving an American flag and had the flag included in their album covers. I'm sure there are some and I'm sure they suck ass too.

I'm glad to hear that IM opposes the gulf war but isn't it true that many conservatives in England oppose the war too? After all they weren't in power.

And what song did the SNP adopt?

I didn't say that the SNP adopted anything: I just said that I've pictured the Clansman as being a damn good anthem for the SNP...To explicitly nationalistic for the SSP though.

The Clansman was basically just a homage to Braveheart, wasn't it? Awesome song though.

Run to the Hills I like, cos it goes into how the indians were genocided. Kinda ironic the Maiden fans who listen to it are white US teens generally

for me, their best song is "hallowed be thy name" which is a wonderful anti-death penalty theme, and also has some existentialism. It reminds me of the last part of the book "The Stranger", by Camus.
