A 19-year-old Turkish man has been jailed for nine years and three months by a German court for shooting his sister in a so-called "honour killing".

The Berlin court's presiding judge Michael Degreif said Hatun Surucu was killed "because she lived her life as she saw fit" and had adopted Western ideas of sexual equality, the AFP news agency reports.

Hatun Surucu was the sixth victim of honour killings among Berlin's 200,000-strong Turkish community in as many months.

I won't threadjack, but at first, I was restricted for my feelings about certain parts of criminal society. I hadn't been on long enough for any of you clairvoyants to decide what I thought ;)

But yeah...bla death penalty stays an odd and sensitive subject to me, especially in the multicultural european society. Western governments are scared of taking hard action against these sort of crimes a few years back because they were afraid of being called "racist". I don't give a shit what another persons religious beliefs are; it's their charachter that counts. I fully agree! If this person is fully capable of taking the life of his sister, what could possibly prevent him from taking anyone else's life?

It's probably especially hard in Germany to deal fairly with this. I've never been one for capital punishment because I find it hypocritical but then there's that other side of me that finds situations like this leaving the guilty deserving of death. Makes me wonder if I'm worthy of death for thinking someone else is worthy of death. It's a vicious cycle.

Of course, in a real communist society this never would have happened and on the off chance it did, things would burn. And people wonder why religion isn't very accepted in our ideals.
